https://soundcloud.com/papagno/swing-baby-swingI am wondering how you get into a drum solo playing Jazz without it sounding like you just started playing for the hell of it? I have listen to various songs and wonder what exactly the point where you begin your solo is? I have tried the trading 4 bars styles and it doesn’t seem like a natural progression to me. What is the musical theory behind soloing in Jazz? I love it to death, but can’t seem to understand the why’s and reasoning behind soloing. I have included a recent track from Soundcloud to give you an idea as to what I’m talking about. I wish I could go back 30 years and go to school to learn musical theory. Thanks for any help

Wow you are good, no great. As for music theory / lessons in jazz, you might want to look at: http://online.berklee.edu/coursesBe aware they are expensive, but they are world renown (spelling ??).

Jazz has theory? Just kidding.... with jazz the entire reason for being is to explore the outer edges and push the envelope. So as far as the theory behind soloing in jazz...... just do it and see where it goes. Regarding any solo, but especially on the drums, the important thing is to be able to start in a reasonable manner, something that relates to the music.... and that's easy since you were already playing the song..... go into the areas you feel like exploring even getting totally off the beat and groove...... but the only requirement I see is to get back into the song in a coherent manner. In the example presented, the drums started the solo at 1:24 and I thought it was as well done as it could be. I didn't hear any major faux pas moments as the music came in and out. I've seen drums do this flawlessly, and I've seen drummers who failed and could not seem to find the proper groove to bring the song back in.

When I was 12 and played drums, I used to listen to Buddy Rich all the time. His extended solos knocked me out. It was not until I was 16 and started learning to improvise on the saxophone that I realized drummers were supposed to follow the same musical form (12-bar blues, 32-bar AABA) as the other musicians..
When I became a young adult in Philly, and sat in with some GREAT drummers (like Mickey Roker who played with Dizzy for years) did I realize how MUSICAL the greats were. You could hear the A section repeat (with variations) a distinct bridge and recapitulation etc..
Most popular music tends to fall into 12-bar or 32-bar forms (with minor variations.) Count the measures of the other soloists and listen for the changes. Drums should work the same way...

The Dallas School of Music has an online program http://dlpmusicprogram.com/ on Jazz theory. It includes play along examples of each lesson. They also have some free blogs on many Jazz subjects. Another offering is the "1 Series" which is a free daily lesson. They have a step up program connected to the 1 Series which includes MavenLink which allows the user to connect directly with various professors. They have set up a program for me to learn and play the 60 chords that are commonly used in Jazz. I'm supposed to learn and play in Musical context the five chords in each key over a period of a few months. When each key signature is mastered, I am to upload a video for them to critique. For me, it's helpful to have a little bit of accountability to stay on track. $100.00 per year!

Thanks for all the info Guys I really do appreciate very much especially the links to Berklee and the Dallas school of music. I think the Dallas music school will the way to go since Berklee is a little out of my financial league. Even though their one of the best if not the best when it comes to music. Guitar Hacker and Philly Jazz you are dead on with the advice. Thanks
