I just swapped PC's for something a little less ancient than what I was previously using, but not something that is up to modern specs. My old soundcard was an M-Audio Delta 1010 Lt with the cable clusters coming off the back. It worked ok but doesn't fit in my current PC case so I'm using two separate USB's now, one for audio and one for midi. I also have dual monitor PCI video card that still works. I used to have an early Aardvark audio/midi interface that ran off SCSI but I think I got rid of that...
So my question is, is PCI going to be around for a while? Next year when I finally upgrade to a 64-bit system, can I just put the old M-Audio back in there? Or will it go the way of the floppy?
Thanks,Dan

I know the dilemma. IMO.... The 1010 was a good interface but it's become ancient. There are several on ebay (I just checked there) with a wide range of condition and bids up to 239$. My buddy (bass player) has retired one and they hovered in the 800$ range IIRC. The question to me, in spite of it's antiquity, does M-Audio offer a driver for Win7 and above? If the current drivers are available I might just wait and keep as a backup or for some unexpected need. PCI may be going bye bye as time goes on but I'm just guessing. If you've really moved on to Win 7/8 and no drivers are/will be available I might try to sell to a private owner locally or if I found that more trouble than it's worth I'd just give it to a friend. I'd guess if you've had it for a while it's long paid for itself and would not expect to get much for it. I've given away many dated hardware devices that had outlived their use to me based on technology and my upgrades or getting lean over the decades. I'm sure other will chime in. That's my take on it....a judgement call for you.

PCI is getting harder to find on motherboards already. On a new system it is something to watch out for. However there are adapters, and other ways to use PCI now.
Yes, 1010 drivers work fine in Win7. I actually liked the older drivers better, but the current ones work.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I'm no hoarder and have gotten rid of many devices but that fact alone would make me keep it at least until driver updates ceased for any currently supported OS. Then...I'd just give to anyone who could use. That's my take on it....

It's going away.
Even if the PCI card slot was on a new machine, the chances of it working get slimmer with time. I have an 8 bit DOS machine in the attic with a slamming 2.4k dial-up modem (do you remember when that was state of the art?) ....yeah, that;s not coming back....... we're at 64 bit now, and soon that will change.
My old D-Man PCI card became history when the OS changed and the company that made the card didn't bother to write new updated OS drivers.....
Options: Use the card in some sort of "art" project.... or throw it in a box to collect dust. Might find someone on ebay who would pay a dollar or so for it..... but not a whole lot of options with old outdated gear.
I hated like all get out to have to buy a new soundcard when I started to set my studio back up after being out for a few years after the D-man driver issue..... but with the Focusrite I have now, and having used it compared to the D-man.... there's just no comparison. Technology has made it so much better.....and in the future, I think it will be even more interesting.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
