Hi,
To use .PAT files, first select the track of interest (bass, piano etc.) then click the [+] button to the left of the volume control - after you select your .pat file, you can choose any patch that is defined in that file from the 'choose patch on higher bank' dialog that will pop up.
The synthesizer/sound card pull-down menu is only for loading ".dk" files, which are mainly useful for remapping the General MIDI instruments for older non-GM compatible synths although there are some other MIDI settings it configures. If your synth IS listed there, you can select it, otherwise "General MIDI Instr Misc" is usually the best option. In addition, that list is not intended to be modified by users, and there is a menu option to load in an alternate dk file (opt.-utilities-). Most people don't need to do this, it was more common years ago when there were alot of non-GM synths around.

Highlights include Brent Mason (electric guitar), Eddie Bayers (drums), Doug Jernigan (pedal steel), John Jarvis (piano), Glen Duncan (banjo, mandolin & fiddle), Mike Harrison (electric bass) and more—offering everything from modern sounds to heartfelt Americana styles
