I have some MIDI on a track in RB, and it's being sent to my external synth. So far so good. However, when I press play in RB, the patch on my synth changes.
At first I thought the MIDI had a patch change in it, but I scrutinized it in Sonar's Event List view...no patch changes. Besides, the patch change happens no matter where I am in the MIDI track when I press play...start, middle of the track, wherever.
Could it be SYSEX data being sent from RB?
How can I disable whatever it is in RB which is sending the patch change data to my external synth?

Right click the Track and look at the Patch and Program selections. Make sure they are set to 'None'.
You can also check your preferences-MIDI settings and uncheck 'Send most recent Patch/Controller' in the MIDI Out area (if desired).
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Those are good suggestions but the bigger issue is what's the source of the midi file? If it's downloaded then it can be full of midi commands you don't want. Highlight a track, hit F2 and look at the Event List. Sometimes a file will have all the midi commands in a separate data file just to confuse you further. If you see sysex strings, remove them. You have to scroll all the way through the tune because there can be embedded commands anywhere.
Downloaded midi files can be fun to play with but they require a good bit of knowledge from you.
