This will effectively "delete" those files so that RB is forced to create new ones (thus the factory rest). If the problem is not solved by doing this, you can always delete the newly created files and then return the original files to their original names.

After doing the above, the next time you start RB, it will ask you to configure your hardware. A re-installation does not force RB to overwrite the above files. This means that if the problem is contained within them, it will still exist after the re-install.

Also ...

Depending on your version of Windows, it might pay to right-click on the RB start-up shortcut, select properties and set RB to run in Administrator mode.

Hope this helps,

thanks Noel, I'm pretty sure it had already rewrote those files when it asked me if I wanted to reinitialize, but I tried it anyway and it went through the same steps as before when it asked me to reinitialize, but the same thing happens. it opens the file, I can see the chords, but the "open" icon is in the "pressed button" mode and it won't do anything. I can't click on any icon or any chord square at all and the CPU in the upper right hand corner says it's at 98-100%.

running in Admin is no different. I have my security set to where I'm essentially running admin mode all the time anyway. I've disabled the UAC in win7.
