this happens regardless of which file I try to open. any of the saved files does this.

RB was working correctly until I changed soundcards. My MOTU had to go for repair. I used a focusrite for the interim. it was fine changing to the focusrite. when I changed back to the MOTU that's when this problem started.

BIAB still works correctly.

when I try to open any file in RB, however, I get an access violation popup and RB freezes and won't do anything.

Yes, after the first time it locked up, I allowed it to do the total reinitialization and that went to the audio setup.

once that was done, it still locked up when I tried to open a file and still gave me the access violation.

Hi Beagle,

Try this ...

Reset RB to factory settings by renaming the REALBAND.INI file and RB.CFG to something like REALBAND.INI.OLD and RB.CFG.OLD. This will effectively "delete" those files so that RB is forced to create new ones (thus the factory rest). If the problem is not solved by doing this, you can always delete the newly created files and then return the original files to their original names.

After doing the above, the next time you start RB, it will ask you to configure your hardware. A re-installation does not force RB to overwrite the above files. This means that if the problem is contained within them, it will still exist after the re-install.

Also ...

Depending on your version of Windows, it might pay to right-click on the RB start-up shortcut, select properties and set RB to run in Administrator mode.

Hope this helps,
Noel

I notice the error is in BBW2.exe, not in RB.exe.
What's strange about this is my current install contains bbw.exe and bbw3.exe
I don't have a bbw2

If Noel's suggestion doesn't work
I'd suggest contacting support and have the error message available.

I have BBW2.EXE in the C:\RealBand\Data folder. Check there.

thanks Noel, I'm pretty sure it had already rewrote those files when it asked me if I wanted to reinitialize, but I tried it anyway and it went through the same steps as before when it asked me to reinitialize, but the same thing happens. it opens the file, I can see the chords, but the "open" icon is in the "pressed button" mode and it won't do anything. I can't click on any icon or any chord square at all and the CPU in the upper right hand corner says it's at 98-100%.

running in Admin is no different. I have my security set to where I'm essentially running admin mode all the time anyway. I've disabled the UAC in win7.

Hi John, check there for what?
the file BBW2.exe exists, it's in the \Realband\data folder.

if I double click on it specifically, the access violation window pops up again, so that's the program CAUSING the popup window to come up, but why? what do I need to do to fix it?

Things I'd look at or try:

Open RB and check the sound card bit rate settings like 16/44 or 24/48 (you may be opening a file of one setting and have the card/RB set to something else). This has happened here with new sound devices.

Try setting the your sound device in RB as the windows default device and then try opening a file to see if it is indeed sound card related.

Try creating a new file, then saving it. Close RB, re-open, and see if a newly saved file exhibits this same behavior.

Try opening a Backup File (File-Open Backup) to see if file corruption has taken place.

Did you remove the focusrite drivers? Maybe there is a conflict there.

Beagle -
I was responding to RHarv's comment that he didn't see the BBW2 file, only the BBW1 and BBW3 files.

Beagle,

Something else to try too ...

When you reinstalled the program, it would have reverted to the build of the original installation. This might not be the most update version of RB (2012).

Have a look at "Help | About Realband". The build of your version will be in brackets after 2012.

You can check this build against the updates found here ...

http://www.pgmusic.com/support.realband.htm

Lastly ...

If you are using ASIO as your audio driver, try setting it to MME. It might be that the ASIO drivers you are using are conflicting with other drivers.

Regards,
Noel

That fixed it! I checked it and it was set to 16/44.1, when I changed it to 24/44.1 and then tried to open a file again that allowed it to continue opening without the access violation!

thanks!!!!!

I added the words 'bit rate' right before posting. Realized he may not know what to look for exactly. At first I just wrote 'sound card settings'.
Gotta remember to give as much detail as possible sometimes. smile

sooooo...this is an "I told you so?" I had visited the audio settings several times but didn't think to change the bit rate. If you had mentioned the bit rate I would have tried changing it, but you didn't do that did you? frown
