Regardless of the type of MIDI you bring in, changing chords on the chord grid will not change the notes in the underlying MIDI file. It will only change the sounds for the style tracks.

BIAB brings the entire file in on the MIDI track, however, using the sequencer feature, you can edit what you want to keep and what you want to do away with.

I'll often bring in a MIDI file and get rid of everything except the melody (which may be on multiple MIDI tracks). Then, I can adjust the chord grid accordingly (however, the melody will stay the same).

Bottom line, the bass in the MIDI file is not the same as the bass track in BIAB (likewise for piano, guitar, etc). Everything on the Melody and Soloist track remains static until you change it yourself. Only the accompaniment tracks change when you change the chord grid.
