I've run into issues with SD cards lately.
Not all SD card readers handle SDXC. Actually, quite a few don't, so you need to be careful your SD reader can handle the new 'SD' cards if you are looking for their speeds.

The SD card reader and the micro SD card reader on my main win7 system will NOT recognize an SDXC card, even though it fits in the slot and seems to be noticed. Hardware device not up to task.

However, the micro SD card reader on my Win8 tablet WILL read it. Newer device spec'd to handle it.

That said, personally, I use SD when I want to leave the card in the device 90% of the time and only remove it to transfer things occasionally.
For normal everyday transferring I keep a couple USB thumbdrives in my pocket. Handy, accepted everywhere, and not THAT much of a speed loss.
