Hopefully this will be simple to seasoned BIAB vets!
I have recently bought an M-Audio Oxygen 49 usb midi controller but when I tried to connect it to BIAB had a latency issue.
BIAB support suggested the following: 1. Install ASIO4ALL: 2. Install LoopBe1: 3i. To configure Band in a Box to use ASIO4ALL: 4. Change Audio Driver Type to ASIO, and select ASIO4ALL v2 as your driver
I`ve actioned these suggestions but nothing has changed, pretty much the same poor latency!
Surely this should be fairly straight forward, can anyone suggest a fix?
Thanks
Mike

Buy a decent external interface (fancy name for a sound card).
In other forums on recording and music, most folks who do this hobby seriously have invested in a good aftermarket interface/soundcard. BiaB works fine for me on MME drivers but not Real Band. And most certainly NOT my DAW software.
Everyone starts out by using the built in sound card in their computer. And that works OK for some things. When you start getting into more serious musical projects and especially when you get into midi and soft synths, you tend to run into problems. Latency appears as a delay in the music related mostly to MIDI but it can be related to other things as well.
Factory cards do not use the proper drivers to handle the musical load needed to get everything to the speakers in sync.
ASIO4ALL is a wrapper that attempts to fool the computer into thinking it's running ASIO, when in fact it's MME wrapped in a codec trying to pretend it's ASIO.
You can try increasing the buffers for audio and midi to see if that will help any. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. I personally never had any success with buffers and wrappers.
Buy an interface that has the inputs and outputs you need..... most basic ones are 2 in 2 out.... stereo in other words and will work fine for most home hobby studio applications. Be sure it has a USB connection to the computer(as opposed to firewire because FW can be problematic with some chip sets) , audio preamps built in, the ability to supply phantom power for condenser mics, and most importantly, that it uses ASIO drivers. NO wrappers, NO codecs, just ASIO. Other drivers are allowed but it must support ASIO as the main driver.
Once you install that interface and set it up properly, it will function as you would expect it to do..... with very little latency in the sound. Every interface has latency, but as long as it's under 10 milliseconds...and that's considered marginal performance, you will never hear the delay in the audio.
My interface was that ahh haa moment.... the clouds cleared, the sun shone, and the birds sang..... well not exactly, but you get the picture.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply.
Do you have any recommendations for a decent external interface?
Thanks
Mike

Just reinstalled my Midiman USB KeyStation 49 Mdi Controller Keyboard (ya, it is old...) With MME drivers in BIAB it has large latency, but when I chose the ASIO for my MAudio Audiophile 192 PCI card, it is quick as a blink.
I then tried ASIO4ALL v2, no sound at all. Seems the input port is "not connected".
Oh well, getting a good ASIO driver with hardware solves the problem.

Thanks for getting back to me.
It looks like I`ll go the /interface/ASIO route.
I first owned BIAB on floppy drive in the mid 90`s. I then had an early Roland 16T digital linked to Cubase. Having left the recording side for a few years whilst playing in a live band I return to find it a bit like learning `Chinese`! It is taking a huge amount of patience to get going again..........

If you are running ASIO4ALL on a laptop, you may find that the ports are mapped differently than for the MME driver. That's why you sometimes get no sound.
On my HP laptop, with MME, I just select the speakers and headphone port, which auto switches between the headphone jack and the internal speakers.
However, if I select ASIO4ALL, I have to explicitly select whether I want to use the headphone jack or the internal speakers (and by the way, they're not labeled that way... I had to figure it out by trial and error.)
Once I knew this, though, ASIO4ALL worked just fine. Changes had to be made on the advanced preferences screen. The simple screen just locked in to the first interface it found.
