Hello all.

Is there any way to convert a Real Drum track to MIDI? I would like to use Addictive Drums within BIAB, but want to use the patterns that BIAB generates.

Thanks.

Bob

Nope. RealDrums were recorded from a real drum set (not a MIDI set), just like you would hear if you went to a concert. Extracting the drum parts would be like trying to unbake a cake to its separate ingredients.

Even the RealTracks for which there is notation (and by extension a MIDI version), are just transcriptions that humans did after the fact, so while the transcriptions are very good, your results will vary.

Hi, sorry to chime in here, but it is actually possible but it requires some money spending and some editing work, get yourself a copy of melodyne editor from celemony load your real drum track into that via rewire (you will also need a daw that supports rewire) then melodyne will determine each pitch of drum note, you can then export as midi to your daw and each note can be assigned to a different midi note no, in addictive drums, or whatever drum vsti you prefer, it will also calculate and write velocities as well, a bit long winded and a bit of money spent, but it is possible, (worth the time and effort, prob not as the midi in most of the drum programs is very good and editable) thanks. Of course, Melodyne Editor is $399, and after you get the "notes", you'll still have to do a lot of tweaking.

Whether it's worth it is up to the individual, especially given that there are tons of free MIDI drum riffs out there to use already.

Thanks guys. I'm not into that much tweaking. I just want better drum sounds, and often find the RD's less than inspiring. Plus, I like having the option to mix the kit.

I guess the obvious question is: "Why not substitute a MIDI drum style for the real drums?" You have at least a thousand to choose from in the existing styles...

Also RealBand has a drum pattern editor that you can use to create custom patterns... and it comes with a LOT of pre-made patterns.... all MIDI

I tried to do that in BIAB. It doesn't work. It works in RB?

Hi Bob, I often use ether AD or EzDrummer, but in that case I just take the patterns created by BIB which often times are pretty good. I understand wanting to edit the drums individually, but I'm not sure that using the midi created from an RD would work very good, but then again never try it.

Good luck

Mike B.

Hi Mike.

I tried that in RB, but the MIDI drum track was not alligned with the Real Tracks! I'm doing something wrong, that's for sure!

Two things there's track offset you can use plus the align track feature. Look those up. Also, most of the Biab midi drum parts were recorded by a real drummer on a midi drum kit. I believe there's a symbol in the Biab style name that tells you which ones use midi live drums but I can't remember what it is. Check that out too.

Bob, AD is a very good drum sound source, as you well know!

I have Melodyne Editor and I have in fact once taken a RD and converted it to MIDI. The only editing I did was to find the right AD sound to match the MIDI, i.e. map the drums. The problem was although that the AD MIDI track sounded better IMHO it was the same rhythms as the RD, thus my conclusion was why bother.

There are a lot of free and purchased MIDI drum loops out there. I have purchased all most all of Groovemonkee's loops, http://www.groovemonkee.com/

Although they are called loops they are really just a few measures of drums that you combine into a complete drum track. I use Toontrack's EZ Player Pro for that; http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EZplayerPro/?utm_source=MSN&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=audio&utm_term=toontrack_ezplayer_pro

EZ Player Pro will follow your DAW, I use Sonar, and you can insert and delete drum parts, yes individual drums or complete kits, as measures until you achieve what you want. You then copy the completed drum part to a MIDI track in your DAW. Of course you can modify the part(s) as needed.

Also don't overlook BiaB's MIDI drum parts. I have used many of those in my compositions.

I hope this helped.

Bob -

Thanks. I will look into that.

Mario -

That is a lot more work than I want to get into. I use Sonar as well, and would just like to have a decent MIDI drum track that I can assign AD to. I did just try a BIAB MIDI drum part, but it was all over the place when played.

What do you mean all over the place. I have used BiaB MIDI tracks in AD and all I had to do was to assign the correct drum to the MIDI part, i.e. drum map. BiaB uses a GM drum map while AD does not. The timing was ok though.

I mean not in time. Offset. Probably something I screwed up. Pilot error.
I'll keep trying.

Thanks,

Bob

Try this to COMPARE the two.
1) Load a style (Demo song let's say)I used BLUESSH.STY. BluesShuffle Quintet Sw(110-150) for a test.
2) BIAB (2015) Right Click Drums > Force to Drum Tracks to Midi
3) Edit Menu Copy/move (move drums to (say) soloist
4) Insert Addictive Drums on to Soloist
5) BIAB (2015) Right Click Drums > Deselect Force to Drum Tracks to Midi
6) Solo/Mute ect to compare the two.

Hey Col,

Does that work in 2014? I'm still stuck in the past.

I don't have that option in 2014. That's that I guess.

In 2014 you just have to go into the Assign Realdrums dialogue and select use midi for this song.

In both 2015 & 2014 it is probably just using a midi drum style assigned to that particular realdrums set. I'm not suggesting that in 2015 you are getting other than a quicker way to force the midi drums.

The purpose is to just compare Addictive Drums to Realdrums.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
