Besides desktop (Win 7 64 lots of RAM and TB's of HDD'S), I run BIAB, RB, PT, Sonar X3 Producer, Kontakt 5, ST2 XL(actually all Total Studio 3 but obviously no ST 3), XLN AD, Jamstix, Ezdrummer, and a bunch of others on my Dell Latitude D820 Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz, 4GB (3.327 available) DDR2 RAM, 750 GB HDD - Win XP 32. Geekbench score 2373.

NO I don't do a lot of heavy concurrent editing, or run scores of tracks in the DAW's with scores of VST processing per track or dozens of large VSTi instruments as routine (even on my desktop). But it works when needed. Yes it's slow(er), it does choke once in a while, not what I would recommend a new user to build from scratch today - but it's a perfectly usable set up.

Great advice about MIDI with external synth module. Actually I run either or BOTH the Roland SC-8850 and Alesis Nanosynth off serial RS-232 port from my laptop - easy plug in and go and I routinely use my laptop to run KARMA for my Motif XS7 - not my desktop.
