Thought I might try RB this year ..... see if it actually works. It never did for me in past incarnations.

Was good for at least 5 minutes. Then CRASH.

It has to be the most unstable software I've used to date and I've used an awful lot.

Not using it again till it actually has a STABLE certificate.

Mal mad cry

Mal, i feel for you, as I have had some unstable software at times. However RB is not one of them. I get pretty decent stability from it. One issue i had was i was hitting play to soon before it fully loaded the file. It would take forever to load up the first, and sometimes second song file. so once i let it load up a couple files it would then start loading them fast and efficiently.

I push my software Robh ..... Can't push RB though. It looks to have features that I would enjoy. It doesn't perform them efficiently though.

I dunno, I've pushed RB pretty hard. It kept going.

I've commonly had 30+ tracks on a file (a lot of them in use, but some muted). Tons of FX running at once (on Tracks, AUX, Subgroups, and MainOut all at the same time). Say 18 tracks with a couple FX each, plus AUX and Sub/Main .. I'd venture to say I have projects with 50+ effects running on 18 live tracks.

Could be something in your workflow, could be a certain VST, could be some system interruption .. many things. If you're willing to walk through the steps there's a good chance it can be fixed.

Describe current system and input/output setup.
How are you using RB?
Recording live? Just generating new parts? Experimenting with different features?
What is the guzzinto and cumzatta?
(that means the input and output devices)

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

rharv ..... I had three rendered real tracks and one midi track. RB froze after 5 mins.

I use Cubase 8 Pro, Studio One, and many, many vst effects and instruments. They never freeze. If something goes wrong with a DAW, more often than not, the software alerts you of the fault, or creates a dump file that can be read and diagnosed to supply an answer.

RB DOES NEITHER.

Wow, that's not much load.

Do you see any yellow screens during the session? RB stores those error messages.

I'm still interested in your input/output device(s)
If not setup right in RB or in conflict inside RB it could easily cause this issue.
Even if the other software runs fine (they may select the correct devices automagically where RB doesn't) this may be valuable info.

No yellow screens.

I read the manuals too rharv. I set up before I set out. Also, when using any music, video software, I disable my virus program and usually disable internet.

I use ASUS Axiom Pro STX, have a very good C drive + 4 internal 2 gig drives in a custom built Cooler Master Cosmos II Ultra Tower Case. Intel(R) CORE i7 CPU 3.47GHz, 3468 Mhz, 6Cores, 12 Logical Processors, 24 gig internal memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580, two DELL Monitors, 7 4TB USB3 external drives. Windows 7 Ultimate.

I use quite a few keyboards. One full size Samick KK1 with weighted keys but usually opt for my Axiom Pro 61. 2 Guitars, studio condenser mics and Alesis mixers.

If it just freezes up on you, you may find clues in the Event Viewer as to what happened.

I assume you've tried different bit rate settings etc ?

I did put a Sony compressor on the drumtrack ..... could have been that, though no messages were given.

The point is, lots of comments are always being given on the forum about the 'glitchy' nature of RB. Some are simple mistakes by the user, some are incompatibilities with 3rd party effects etc. etc. Fact is .... I have an impatient nature when I use RB, when I find I am spending too much time identifying why it freezes or crashes, rather than simply making music.

It makes for an unenjoyable experience.

Understood.

Solving the issue makes it much more enjoyable .. whether that is worth it for you is your decision.
I have also found plugins that cause issues in RB for whatever reason. There has always been an alternative that worked so I just figure it out and move on. I'm not trying to sell it to you (you already have it!) just trying to help.

I've never seen a message from a plugin error, though they can be a very likely suspect.

I tried RB a couple of years ago, but stopped using it because of stability issues. frown

I had a few issues yesterday in RB it could not see my ASIO driver, but After bouncing a few ideas around with Kent a second reinstall of the Presonus driver solved the issue nicely. RB is a bit shakier than my other DAW softwares, still i find it to be solid enough for most projects, especially live performance stuff.

If i were going to push it real hard and do original recordings with 30 - 40 tracks, separate drum, guitar, vocal busses and such i would track in Studio one. It has a far richer tool set, and better Plugins. I personally prefer native plugs, as you just never have issues with them. One of the reasons i bought Studio one, the other being i liked the demo that came with my interface (presonus 1818VSL, is that it has a very large stable of native plugs. Most of these rival anything you can buy third party.

If you are getting that kind of instability there is something in conflict internally one of the plugs, or another software title.

Try this Mal, set RB to use MME drivers and see it is get more stable, i find it runs the best on MME. While i have it working on my laptop on ASIO sometimes it runs a lot higher CPU on ASIO, so if playing a set of music I will use MME for lower CPU levels which adds to stability.

That's exactly the point, Rob. ASIO has been the de facto standard driver protocol in the professional world for many years, but ASIO support in RB and BIAB has always been (and still is) problematic. A solid, bug-free ASIO support for BIAB and RB should be a priority for the development team.

Cerio I have very solid ASIO on RB. But I will add it has not always been that way. Plus ASIO has always been more of a resource hog on RB than MME. I think because of it's umbilical cord relationship with BiaB RB tends to be just a bit "heavy", or maybe slow to respond.

Like I said for basic and even medium size jobs with not to much of a load. a reasonable amount of VSTs and VSTis I get very stellar results. I f I were to do a deep tracking session with more than 30 tracks, or were going to track without any RTs or BiaB features I would track in a different DAW. Not because RB can't but because the other has a deep tool set for that direction. A saw cuts, a hammer drives, and so forth. RB is great at what it does bridging the gap to BiaB and giving us a DAW that can add multiple tracks to a BiaB session, or create a BiaB like session from scratch.

You are right in that it needs some attention for stability in a few areas, but truly all DAWs do, I think a few of RBs issues really grab the attention. I think you have to agree though that the fact Mal can track 5 tracks, means that it is some system issue not just purely RB. After all he seems to ahvce a killer system, but something is in conflict.

to me the bug fixes, then the tempo lock, and ASIO should be key, then after that things like upgrading the automation one more time.
