Hi, I was wondering if anyone had come across this before. When entering a chord with a flattened fifth - e.g. 'E5b', 'C5b' etc. - the Real Tracks seem to play an augmented instead.

So rather than hearing a C with a Gb, I hear a C with a G#.

However, the MIDI tracks seem to interpret the chord correctly.

Of course, it could just be my ears!

Hi G189,

It's possible that it's Realtrack specific.

What I do when things like this happen is to generate the song and freeze all the tracks. I then send a copy of the frozen sgu file to support@pgmusic.com and point out which bars have the problem.

Support will appreciate your help with this.

Regards,
Noel

Some time ago, I confirmed with Support that when a RealTrack is recorded, the musician may or (more likely) NOT play, every single variation of the chords.

If you look at the list of possible chords in BIAB, you can understand why.

You may have to "settle" for a similar chord or add a note or 2 of MIDI to get something to sound exactly right.

In playing jazz, a Cb5 chord is played many times as a whole tone line, thus the G#. Ray

Ray,

I don't have your experience in jazz, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but what you say about C5b versus C#5 sounds like it's a triadic variation of what BIAB calls C7alt. (Note: if you click on the below image, it will take you to the site from which this information was obtained.)

You're correct about what C7alt is. Cb5/C+ is different. The instance where a whole tone scale sound is wanted, the altered 9ths wouldn't be involved. If I saw Cb5 or C+, the tune would determine what I played. Ray

Noel

IN the above description they could not simply say:

"...where the 5th and the 9th are ALWAYS altered"

In lieu of the cumbersome, and wordy (with a negative no less)

"..in which neither the fifth nor the ninth appears unaltered"

Oh wait a second, I know why they said it that way. It was obviously constructed on a 64 bit OS using a 64 bit word processing program - that always makes it better. smile

(OK folks - you know that above was all in fun, right?)

+1 You had to look at that sentence more than once to make sure you read it right! Ray

Hi Larry,

That got me laughing!!!! LOL. The power of 64 bits!

You're right though, it's a cumbersome way of saying things. I should have looked for a clearer explanation. Oh well ...

Thanks for smile smile
Noel

P.S. One has to admire how grammatically adroit the writer is with negatives. It's impressive to see 'neither', 'nor' and the prefix 'un-' all linking smoothly and properly together.

Thanks for your input guys - this thread has become very informative! I don't think I tried the 'aug' chord option to see what that did... that may be the next step in the interim...

G189, if this is a jazz song you are doing, you can also try using a #11 chord. The pitch of a #11 is enharmonically the same as the b5, just up an octave.
