My mother has admired my signature line, which I have used in my personal email for almost 10 years. Every time I think about changing it, something happens to renew its appropriateness. This evening she sent me this quote from the same source.

Quote:

So here it is. What have we learned in 2,064 years?

Quote:

"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero, 55 BC

So, evidently nothing..

All great empires eventually collapse and disappear into oblivion. For example:

The Ancient Egyptian
The Hittite
The Minoan
The Trojan
The Ancient Greek
The Roman
The Viking
The Dane
The Saxon
The British
The French (under Napoleon - brief)
The Nazi (which never quite made it, thank God)
and so on...

The last of these is the American (which is somewhat different in that it does not have an Emperor per se - though don't tell that to the Bush family)

However, each of these Empires did bring some serious social advances and developments on all scores: political, philosophical, religious, economical, technological, etc.

I think the best way of summing up the developments in the Human Race is to consider the message from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Universe' - Man is merely an infestation of Planet Earth with ideas above its station

Interesting post, R. Thanks for that

I thought I was reading something just written until I came to the word "Rome"!!
Why can't we have the people in power who know what needs to be done & do it?
Sometimes I think it's because of the votes of lazy people who want to be taken care of.
The ones who feel "entitled" simply because they exist.

Isn't that what Darth Vader said? Oh wait - that Empire fell too

I think they would want the job, they'd just never get it because they wouldn't offer "free stuff".

Simple Bible verse. " ..... It does not belong to earthling man even to direct his own steps" Jeremiah 10:23

All man made systems ultimately fail, and many time not due to evil intent, but due to shortsightedness.
