Im trying to get a clue to what all this stuff means!

First 64 bit effects, VSTs, VSTi or programs (like SampleTank 3 for example) means nothing UNLESS your computer has a 64 bit operating system. 64 bit operating systems have become the default operating system provided with new, off-the-shelf computers.

64 bit effects and VSTs can give more nuanced or realistic sounds but typically require much more ram memory due to the large numbers used and generated.

The "J Thingy" let's 64 bit stuff work with a 32 bit program like BiaB or RB.

This is a 30K foot view (lots of details left out)

First by way of what a VSTi and VST are:

VSTis - are basically soft synths (Kontact 5, Additive Drums , Jamstix, Dim Pro, Sampletank 2.5 or 3, etc.)

VSTs - are effects (EQ's, compressors, reverbs, etc.)

NOW a 64 bit VSTi can load and play back individual or combined sample (aka instruments) - pianos, drums, flutes, string sections, brass sections… that individually or combined (like a full orchestra or a band) are LARGER than 4 GB. Actually RAM size up to the operating systmes (OS) RAM LIMIT: The theoretical limit is some exabytes, but the current address tables are set up to 128 GBs, depending on the version of OS you have, in any case, it allows for more RAM than the majority of mother boards allow installed anyway). That's it's BIGGEST benefit that you will see argued here anyway; it can use more RAM.

And finally both a VSTi and a VST, can again use more as mentioned RAM, but in the 64 bit environment it runs more "efficiently" that is, it has less of a load on the CPU (usually) then it's 32 bit counterpart - that alone allows more "stuff" to be going on.

Hope this helps
Larry

The RAM usage is the major benefit of going to 64-bit as nicely explained above. Supposedly there is a minor (by comparison) benefit having to do with system stability. Supposedly, 32-bit plugins may be more stable when run in a 32-bit OS. Also 64-bit plugins in a 64-bit OS. The challenge, stability wise, is crossing between the two.

Hi, Bloc-Head,

jBridge works both ways. With it, you can use 64-bit VST(i)'s with a 32-bit application and you can use 64-bit VST(s)'s with a 64-bit application.

Some music applications support it natively (BIAB, RealBand, Sonar, etc), in which case you don't have to "wrap" the VST using jBridge first; you just select it and use it.

For those that don't support it natively, you must first run a utility to create a "bridged" version of the VST, and then you select that instead. Be careful when you do that that you don't move the VST dll's around afterwards, otherwise, jBridge won't find it.

Also, as has been pointed out, you can't run 64-bit anything with a 32-bit operating system. If you are still using Windows XP 32-bit or Windows 7 32-bit, for example, having jBridge isn't going to help you any. A VST is a dll file that is just a small application that requires a host to run. But just like you can't run the 64-bit version of Sonar on a 32-bit operating system, likewise, you can't run the 64-bit VST either. In fact, you probably won't even be able to install the VST in the first place.

jBridge is just what it's name says, a bridging utility to allow use of both 32-bit and 64-bit VST(i)'s in either 32-bit or 64-bit applications on a 64-bit operating system.

Yup...the biggest advantage to 64 bits is that you can go above 4G memory. By adding more memory, and being able to use it effectively, a quad core processor can really shine.

I've been running a 32 bit XP pro OS on an i5 Intel chipped system with 4G RAM installed and have no problems either with loading and running large "memory hog" synths and FX or speed of the system.

The industry standard now is 64 bit. Everything is either there or headed that way. So now days I have to check if I'm buying something new, that it has a 32 bit version included.

At some point, I'll have to do the upgrade.....likely when my system dies and the new stuff won't support the 32 bit OS.

The answer is probably. I say probably based on personal experience.

Today I use Jbridge to bridge a few 32-bit only VSTis/VSTs to my 64-bit Sonar; I used to have more but most of my 32-bitters are now 64-bit. When I first got 64-bit Sonar I had a lot of 32-bit VSTis/VSTs. Most all of them bridged ok with either JBridge or Sonar's built in BitBridge. A few refused to be bridged. So the answer to your question depends on the 32-bit VSTi/VST.

OK, a random thought;
