I use both a USB keyboard and an AKAI EWI-USB MIDI input devices in other MIDI based products with no problem.
The keyboard works well in BIAB. But my wind controller is not recognized as an input device.

The EWI uses MIDI over USB protocols just as my Roland SC-8820 tone module. No problem with the SC-8820!

BIAB does recognise the EWI (Electronic wind Instrument) as and output device.

Any thoughts on how I can get this to work??

Does your EWI show up in the Audio Midi Setup application in your utilities folder?
If not, you'll have to rescan devices

Output device? Why would you want to set it up as an Output device? Or do you mean input device?

If you have it configured in Audio/Midi correctly, then you'd just need to select it in the Midi setup for BinaB.....though I hope they really straighten out that part of the program....it is so.....retro.....

Sure does. I use LOGIC Studio and can create a strip that recognizes the EWI-USB and its Garritan Aria interface with no problem.

I do not want the EWI to be used as an output device.
I just wanted to mention that while BIAB does not recognize the EWI-USB as an input device, it does recognize it as an output device.
And that does not make any sense.

Hey, I've got the same EWI and the same problem. Have you figured out how to fix it?

Hey, my AKAI EWI USB still doesn't work with BIAB. Shame because I can't use it to play melodies into BIAB. Anyone fix this or know how to set it up?

After downgrading my system back to 10.5.8, I can play melodies into BIAB. HOWEVER, I STILL don't see that as a choice under midi input in the midi menu.

Hey guys,

Can you update me on the status of getting your EWI USB to be seen by BIAB as an Input?

I did find out that you must have the EWI checked in both INPUT & OUTPUT in Aria. This didn't make sense to me, as I was sure I didn't need to worry about the output.

This is a BIG dealbreaker for me if I can't use the EWI USB with Snow Leopard and BIAB.

Thanks,
Ed

Hi,

Are you sure you have set it up in the Audio MIDI Setup window? To get there, go to /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup (or you can choose the menu option in Band-in-a-Box). You should see a MIDI interface icon there, that is connected to an "external device" with a cable. You would just need the one cable going from the output on the device to the input on the interface. Click the Test Setup button, and play your controller. If that doesn't do anything or if you don't see an interface there at all, then perhaps you have to install software from the manufacturer.

If you get it configured properly there, open Band-in-a-Box and you should be able to choose the input in the CoreMIDI-choose ports dialog. (If Band-in-a-Box was open and you made a change in the Audio MIDI Setup window, quite and restart the program.

Hey guys,

Looking for any update on these EWI USB issues? Andrews post is right on the money, but I'm wondering if anyone now has the EWI seen as a proper input, midi wise?

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed And Andrew
I am an advanced user of BIAB and Logic Studio. As has been said previously there is no issue running the EWI-USB in logic... Not one Issue!

This is not the case with BIAB. I bet Andrew has not tried hooking up an actual Akai EWI-USB, have you Andrew. I know I can't.

BIAB will not recognize the EWI as a proper input… Period! If the EWI operates with other systems but not BIAB, then BIAB is at fault.

Garritan can't help with this as it is a PG Music issue. Listen, I've been a BIAB user when it ran under MS-DOS.

I love BIAB but you people need to support the MAC crowd somewhat better than you have in the past.

Yes, MAC's have only 5% of the entire market, but that is still millions upon millions of users. Users that are heavily concentrated in the Arts, many very seriously so.

For example I write movie scores. We need some help here.

A BIG +1 to Bob's post above!! We need to get this working in BIAB. I have tried every method I can find, I have also downloaded programs that claim to provide a software midi input, etc. Nothing I have tried so far is working. I would love to use my EWI USB with Biab live on my gigs, but at this point I just cannot make it work.

Since the EWI does show up as a valid input for both Logic, Pro Tools 8 and Sibelius, why will it NOT show up in BIAB? Pulling my hair out here, not much left.....so an answer from the Techs at PG would be very welcome right now.

Thanks,
Ed

I don't know, but can someone post a screenshot of their CoreAudioMIDI Setup window, or email a screenshot, or describe it.

(I realize you probably have it set up correctly, but haven't seen that confirmed in this thread).

I am also never at fault. Stuff is not my fault.

It's everyone's elses problem. I spent 3 weeks to make my TC Helicon Voicelive to work.

I should have dissed the software. Works fine now that I understand the thing.

One must describe the entire process you are using, including midi port, input device, output devices, midi instruments in the chain, and what the output from the midi monitor shows. And what midi settings one is using. So, in short, there are a lot of variables. One must at first eliminate I.O. errors. If you don't know what I.Ol means, well figure it out....

Oh and by the way, once this Idiot Operator figured out what I was doing wrong, it worked just fine....

uhh, the previous by john is almost in coherent to me. Dude, you're supposed to be helping people in this forum, not adding to the confusion!
I would like to report that also my Akai EWI USB is not working inside BIAB. I don't know how to do screen shots in here, but I can tell you that it works just fine as an input device in Finale, Logic Express and Garage Band. In the end, I cannot play melodies into BIAB.

You may have to record your backing tracks into another program, such as Reaper, and then play your EWI USB into that. This was discussed at length at
www.patchmanmusic.com/forum/ One person out of many was able to get his EWI to work at the same time with BIAB and he really didn't know how he did it. Most were trying just to get BIAB and the EWI to to play together and only one or the other would play. Later, Ray

You could just send it as an attachment to support@pgmusic.com. Command+Shift+4 is an easy way to get the screenshot.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
