I sort of took him for granted, but now I look back and know what genius really means
Take a look at this clip. First Fred Astaire's hands only, his considerable piano skills, (unless he has Scott Joplin hidden somewhere).
Keeping 'in character' all the while, he gets up and begins conducting an orchestra whilst singing to Ginger Roberts.
All the while its all choreographed, even the dialogue, Fred manages to turn around at exactly the right moment to invigorate the orchestra, then stare and sing at his wayward love doll.
Springing off the stage, he proceeds to dominate the action again with his eloquence....
