I have a song with a melody, and the rhythm of the melody does not seem to properly displayed in the "regular" notation view or leadsheet view. The style is swing.

If I start a measure with three sequential triplet eighths, the aforementioned views accurately display notes - three notes tied, with the triplet "3" displayed. If, however, I make the first note a rest, followed by the two triplet eighths, the views show no rest, but rather two non-triplet, tied eighths, no rest. I would expect to see a triplet eighth rest followed by the two triplet eighth notes.

Again, BIAB is consistent with this in both the views. and when I look at the "editable" notation view, the rest is clearly displayed, as well it should. And BIAB plays it correctly.

Am I missing something? Any ideas.

Deselecting 'clean' may be your ticket.

Thanks Martin - But I did fiddle with that and other display settings with no luck.

I did some experimenting and see (I think) when BIAB follows orders and when it doesn't.

New song, swing style. All notes and rests are 8th triplets,

Enter the notes manually in PRV, or play live (then quantize, if you like) and the problem of my original post exists. Even here, when viewing in editable notation view, all appears perfect (rest, note note), but in regular notation view and lead sheet views, triplet is displays only as to non-triplet 8ths.

Enter the rest followed by two notes manually in editable notation view, and rest and notes are displayed perfectly in all views including regular notation view and lead sheet views. So it seems that the only way to get a correct display is enter them manually in editable notation view.

Now the coup de grâce. If I enter the three notes manually in editable notation view, all is properly displayed (as expected). BUT, if I delete the first note of the triplet, creating a rest, the problem of my original post exists. Note, the rest does show up in the editable notation view but all other displays show two non-triplet 8ths.

So, this is no biggie as I have a manual work-around, But I'd like to know if I'm seeing this wrong or is this a genuine BIAB problem.

Iff 'Tick Offset' is different from zero.

Note, the Tick Offset settings in the Notation Options do affect the notation. Often these settings are around -7, say. When reset to 0 the triplet rest does show up even when not entered explicitly. Setting Tick Offset to -7 again makes this rest vanish - 'Clean' assumed to be unchecked throughout.

Explicitly entering a rest seems to help in this quest.

The only way I can get rest-note-note in a triplet to notate properly is to turn off the "clean" checkbox. Unfortunately this makes for a poor looking leadsheet. Changing tick offset does not resolve this problem. Is there a way to have "clean" notation ON, and still get a triplet with the rest-note-note?

Hi tsimpson,

I have BIAB version 2015 and I set the tick off-set to zero, activated the "swing resolution" and I was able to print the following triplets.

A little more information about your song would be useful. Are you in swing time or an even-beat time? Also, what version of BIAB do you have?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Noel-

Thanks for responding. I unchecked CLEAN and the notation now shows correctly. From some experience in the past, I thought I needed CLEAN to be checked in order to get a good looking lead sheet. Not true, it looks fine.

Regards,
TS
