Interesting even if you do not like Country.
Would likely apply to Pop Music as well... Well...I gave it a listen so guess I'll chime in. The vid was quite an effort by the author. I'm not so sure pop music could be compared (IE: 'mashed up') in the same fashion. I've never cared for country music for a few reasons but music taste is subjective. The prosaic sameness (especially lyrics/subject matter) of it all is the biggest turn off for me which was commented on at the beginning of the write-up. Given my distaste for country music in general I would not equate the mushy contemporary country genre with the older (and IMO) more authentic country of decades past....not having any real knowledge but just my gut feeling. But....if that is what the masses like (in whatever genre) in the commercial music world...so be it...and I'll wish all success in making their living doing what works. They'll all be happy to race me to the bank and get the last laugh.  I commented on one of your songs some time ago and will re-state that you have an excellent voice and IMO is radio worthy for the genre. Carry on....a great day to all.

Upon further reflection....it would be interesting to cherry pick, say, five songs from the top twenty (annualized) hits from different genres and see how it worked out. And do it for 10, 20, 30, 40, years ago. Huge project but I'd suggest the similarity effect would hold.

I've been playing country music on radio for over 30 years now.
Majority of the enjoyable ones have all had a really good story, whether it be funny or sad, IMO they should also have a good melody

several months ago I mentioned turning my radio to a country station while I worked in my garage (I don't normally listen to country music) but in that 3 hour period it was already obvious to me that this chord pattern and melody combination was being used in country music the way C-Am-F-G was used in 60s songs
Regarding the pattern, and the application to other genres:
About 10 years ago I started listening to contemporary Christian music. At that time this same chord progression was very commonly used in that genre. My thinking is that since bible belt and country music share a lot of the same demographic, it makes sense that what the home schooled kids were listening to 10 years ago would start showing up in country music as they grew up.
There have been similar compilations of 60s, 70s and 80s songs overlaid that use different recurring chord pattern... I think its part of what makes one genre and era different from another
My 2cents worth. But then, I've been accused of being the person who put the "anal" in "analysis", so take it with a grain of salt.

Lawrie those are even the same 4 chords as in Floyd's post... and they span just about every genre from 70s rock, 80s-90s pop, and now country

Thanks for this find, it provided me with an audible example to show to some people what I had been trying to tell them for years now about how prevalent that "Chank ah Chank" sound and cadence is in country music and vocals.

Most of the user showcase chord progressions have been fairly unique in my opinion. But it would be interesting to see if somebody can point out one from the showcase that does use this 4 chord progression

It's pretty much only the chord pattern that has made its way through so many different genres. It seems to me that unless Nashville stops encouraging the cookie cutter approach to writing sellable songs, their market is going to cave in on itself. Whatever bad things the internet may have done to the music industry, one GOOD thing it has done is to give a LOT of talented songwriters access to a global audience. As a result, listeners are being exposed to ideas and trends that would NEVER pass the suits in the music industry. People have been complaining about the sameness for years.. but now there are alternatives to the radio, and a LOT of it is really good stuff! Once the average listener realizes they have a choice between "same old same old" or "new and interesting"... listeners will shift to wherever the best mix is at the time. And it probably won't be radio. Apart from SIRIUS which is satellite based.. does anybody know if any automakers are installing music systems that can directly access the internet? If they aren't yet, I'd guess that isn't far away. The new wave of everything is smart devices that access the internet. That will surely spill over into car stereos where its already a no-brainer.

Should Eddie The Imp start some stuff again? So given that all 6 of those songs done in the mash up are essentially the same song, which composer is the writer and which of the others are the plagiarists? Does that, in my definition, relegate them to "less than complete" status? And..... discuss.
