One of my top five favorite pianists for sure. I was really sad when he passed a couple of years ago. I was fortunate enough to see him at the Hollywood Bowl maybe 5 years ago and you could tell he was losing it a bit but still played well. One tune he didn't do was Blue Rhondo. I assume it was because he just couldn't handle it any more.

The height of my personal jazz playing was I worked that song up about 10-12 years ago with our sax player and performed it 3 or 4 times. Unfortunately, the jazz gigs have dried up around here so any time I get a gig it's basically a pickup band reading the Real Book and there's no way to do Blue Rhondo without some rehearsal. At least I did it decently and still play it at home for practice but I doubt I'll ever play it out again.
