A couple of other random thoughts that may also help:

In the Melody or Soloist menus, you can select to drop the pitch by an octave. If that results in the notes looking Ok but sounding too low, you can go into Preferences, Channels and alter the octave setting. Bass is normally -1, or sounding one octave lower than written.

Also:

I often have difficulty entering notes by the mouse into the area between treble and bass clefs. What I do is enter a note in the correct timing position but somewhere on the treble clef, then left-click and hold to drag that note down to the correct pitch.
