I wrote this song on guitar with this arpeggiated triplet but couldn't find the proper BIAB instruments until now. I didn't think of searching for piano. Lawrence, Brother you can really sing. Very soulful. I have to say I always liked this song and I prefer the original. It's got that Steve Cropper style guitar and the Booker T B3. It's just right for the style. And the drum sound is better in the original. Sometimes it's better not to screw with perfection. Anything in this Van Morrison right from the heart soulful style is your wheelhouse. Excellent!!! So glad I heard this again. Tom

Tom That is too cool that you like the original (in one sense "mistake") better. That is a nice Hendrix-like guitar from BIAB. And I don't dislike it as much as I thought. I was simply happy to find the piano (a midi super track) with the triplets and give it a go the way I wrote it. Vocally I feel the vibe of the melody better with the triplets. Thank you!

Hi Lawrence, Have listened to both versions... The first version wins for me Voice and guitar are of course outstanding in both versions, but the second "orchestra" gets predictable after a while. And the first version sounds more like "stone drunk again" IMHE(xperience)  G Fred

I like both versions too.. and I can see why you were looking for the arpeggiated instrumentation. But here are a couple of reasons why I prefer the original: 1) The arpeggiated thing has been done so many times it's hard to make it sound new, even when its wrapped in a clever new song like yours. 2) Your first go-round is unique to you. And I like the sparse arrangement with the prominent snare and background organ. It's more of a gutsy bluesy sound that matches the theme of your song without sounding like something that's been done before. Since you have such a signature sound, I almost hate to hear you venture into familiar territory... you're too good at being unique to bother with anything ordinary. having said that, the second version is more lush and R&B whereas the first version was more sparse and bluesy. I'd kind of like to hear horns in the 2nd version since you opted to take it in a more orchestrated direction. Or not. Both versions are great! Have listened to both versions... The first version wins for me Voice and guitar are of course outstanding in both versions, but the second "orchestra" gets predictable after a while. maybe the addition of horns would break it up a bit

When I wrote this song I was trying to convey to a younger friend that he didn't have to try to reinvent the wheel every time he wrote a song. When I picked up my guitar this old 50's style just kind of came out and it was perfect for what I was tying to get across to him so I went all in with it and wrote this song. floyd Thanks Floyd. The piano, bass and strings are midi from BIAB and rendered with the Dimension Pro soft synth that comes with Sonar. I didn't do much to them except roll off some low end on the bass and piano. I think the 1st version sounds more lonesome and soulful. More down and out. I like both versions but I prefer the original version. I like the Hendrix'esque backing guitar more than the piano arpeggio. Lovely guitar solo too, perfect fit for the song.

I listened to both versions and think the first version fits the vibe and matches your lyrics best. I agree with others who've mentioned a Platters, Drifters feel about the second version and that vibe sort of disconnects with the lyrics.
