Strange, I thought I've seen this conversation before....

Steve thanx for that update. When I purchased Win 7 Pro I had a choice between it and Win 8. According to my PC builder and my brother Win 8 did not have those options. Maybe it was added in win 8.1, don't know but thanx for that information as it puts a completely different vision I had for Win 10.

Now I have to go and wash the egg off my face!

Now pardon me while I update BIAB/RB. Those patches are a few days old! I'm so far behind. wink ....and done.

don't underestimate the effect those differences can have on one's ability to be productive. I bought my win 8 laptop just before a gig. Time was tight, had to copy all my music stuff to it... Trying to accomplish ANYTHING without the start button and the menu it always provided was enough to make me wish I had bought win 8.

When you used to know how to find the cheese, and somebody redesigns the maze, it tends to make the mice frustrated.

Once I got a start button and could find stuff again, I'd have to agree it works about like win 7, maybe better. But their original intent was to force us down a road most of us don't want to go. If not for the 3rd party start buttons, a lot of us would have gone back to win 7 instead of adapting.

Gotcha, thanks Pat. When I had jumped to the Win8 upgrade some friends had already done so and sent that "Classic Start Menu" app link to me. If I had not had that insight I imagine some frustration would have seeped in.

LOL... Yeah, some Red Hat music apps would be nice too.

For some reason, every time I think about this free Windows 10 upgrade, I think about that STNG episode where the crew plays that free game that takes over their mind.

Yes, I have Corel Draw, Foxpro; and Visual Basic 3 that all require emulator mode. I currently use Easy Office for most tasks and MS Works for its simplicity.

I have no problem with Win 8.1 - I downloaded "Start Menu X" for free and it does what the old XP start menu did. I spend 10 bucks for the upgrade because as a software author, I understand we are underpaid for the amount of time - plus the upgrade gave me some unnecessary but convenient extra functions.

It opens up on the desktop and there is no reason to see the metro interface at all.

Some of the functions of 8.1 are better than 7, and I miss a few things about 7 too, but all and all I think 8.1 is better.

I'll probably go for the 10 upgrade when it becomes available (I'll wait until the cutting edge/bleeding edge is over before installing it though).

I still have a 2002 ThinkPad running onstage with XP, and another newer one in the studio running some old programs.

I've really had no problem with any MS program, but I did avoid Win2000 and Vista because I didn't need a new computer back then and everything wasn't broken - so why fix it?

I am told win 10 will be free only for the first year. After that a monthly yearly charge will be made. The licensing will be similar to Office 365.

"...Microsoft used to charge a pretty penny for its operating system, but for the first year at least, the new Windows 10 OS will be a free service for most users. However, Microsoft has yet to fully explain how much it will cost afterwards".

I just feel there has got to be a "got ya" here somewhere.

Of course there is; it is Micro$oft after all. Consider the net worth of Bill Gates, Steve Balmer, and now Satya Nadella (working to catch up), and you know there's gonna be some dollars flowing somewhere. They didn't get to where they are by giving things away.

But, there was a statement in the article about once you have it on your computer, there won't be additional charges. But that's no guarantee of what the future brings.

It did also talk about more heavily integrating the cloud. It makes me wonder if they are looking to monetize with cloud subscription fees, as folks look more and more to synchronize their computers and devices. Movies take up a lot of space, and if you want it available on your computer, phone, and tablet, you're probably going to put it in the cloud and stream it, rather than storing it locally. That definitely seems to be the direction things are going.

I personally do have a concern about a subscription concept for an operating system. Were that implemented, it means that if you don't pay, you can't use your computer. Think about all the computers that get donated to charity. Those charities are generally not going to be able to pay subscriptions to keep their computers running (which was the whole point of donation in the first place). I suspect a lot more computers will also end up in the dump, rather than on eBay or Craig's List, as folks will balk at paying a subscription fee to keep it running. You can choose which applications to run (free, paid, or subscription), but you need an operating system to just use your computer for anything.

Or, it could be the shot in the arm that Linux needs.

But I suspect also that if Ubuntu Linux, for example, ever reached the presence of Microsoft Windows, its free days would be numbered. When there's a lot of money to be made, well you know what happens.

But this is all speculation at this point. We'll see what the future holds when it gets here.

Excellent points John, What would happen if you need your data abnd your sub is not valid? Could be a nightmare. Also I have always wondered what happens if someone passes on, do Cloud services simply delete the tata family photos and all?

I'm not a fan of keeping anything in the cloud without a backup in my possession. I'm not that trusting.

Windows as a subscription service leads one to thinking. It would depend on how much the service costs. Will it balance out with the cost of regular upgrades?. Will it still work if I stop the subscription but just not get supported? Will MS fix it if it screws up during the subscription period???

Of course M$ wants to make a profit. The only reason to be in business is to make a profit. People go to work to make a living. I do think that sometimes the profit is unreasonable for some products, but that's Capitalism. It gives another a chance to under-price with a new product.

I'd go Linux if I could get all the music programs that I like on it. The idea of open source really appeals to me.

With a profit based system, new editions and new features often come for the profit more than the need. With open source the new editions and features come for the need and useless new features are less common.

Of course you have the other side of the coin too. The profit based systems have more incentive to improve the product. Getting a great feature out there before the competition can put your quarterly figures above Wall Street expectations.

So right now, I'm doing a "wait and see" option. Thanks for posting and keeping us updated.

I found the link for the download for anyone interested. You need to have a Hotmail or some other Microsoft account or you can create one. I'm going to load my laptop up with it and see how it goes. Upgrading from Win8.1.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
