I wrote this song on guitar with this arpeggiated triplet but couldn't find the proper BIAB instruments until now. I didn't think of searching for piano. So here it is as I intended. https://soundcloud.com/lawrence-olivier/thinking-of-you-arpeggioand for those who might be interested, here is my first attempt ... https://soundcloud.com/lawrence-olivier/thinking-of-youThinking of you (August 2012?) Well I’m stoned drunk again Walking home alone once again And I’m thinking, I’m thinking of you And I try, yes I do to control the things I do But you’re like a vice that I just cain’t lose And I wonder just how long/ I can survive, carry on It’s like a cold, cold rain/ that never washes away the pain That thunder calls, and I’m stone drunk again So I remain the same Night after night I never change There’s nothing I can do to keep my self From thinking of you And I wonder just how long/ I can survive, carry on It’s like a cold, cold rain/ that never washes away the pain That thunder calls, and I’m stone drunk again

Lawrence, Brother you can really sing. Very soulful. I have to say I always liked this song and I prefer the original. It's got that Steve Cropper style guitar and the Booker T B3. It's just right for the style. And the drum sound is better in the original. Sometimes it's better not to screw with perfection. Anything in this Van Morrison right from the heart soulful style is your wheelhouse. Excellent!!! So glad I heard this again. Tom

Tom That is too cool that you like the original (in one sense "mistake") better. That is a nice Hendrix-like guitar from BIAB. And I don't dislike it as much as I thought. I was simply happy to find the piano (a midi super track) with the triplets and give it a go the way I wrote it. Vocally I feel the vibe of the melody better with the triplets. Thank you!

Hi Lawrence, Have listened to both versions... The first version wins for me Voice and guitar are of course outstanding in both versions, but the second "orchestra" gets predictable after a while. And the first version sounds more like "stone drunk again" IMHE(xperience) G Fred

I like both versions too.. and I can see why you were looking for the arpeggiated instrumentation. But here are a couple of reasons why I prefer the original: 1) The arpeggiated thing has been done so many times it's hard to make it sound new, even when its wrapped in a clever new song like yours. 2) Your first go-round is unique to you. And I like the sparse arrangement with the prominent snare and background organ. It's more of a gutsy bluesy sound that matches the theme of your song without sounding like something that's been done before. Since you have such a signature sound, I almost hate to hear you venture into familiar territory... you're too good at being unique to bother with anything ordinary. having said that, the second version is more lush and R&B whereas the first version was more sparse and bluesy. I'd kind of like to hear horns in the 2nd version since you opted to take it in a more orchestrated direction. Or not. Both versions are great! Have listened to both versions... The first version wins for me Voice and guitar are of course outstanding in both versions, but the second "orchestra" gets predictable after a while. maybe the addition of horns would break it up a bit

Hi Lawrence, We like this one very much, but the first version is very different from this one and is also very good. We don't know which one to choose.... so we'd better not Rob and Anne-Marie

The piano in the new version seems too "thin" to me - so it seems out of place in the production - against such a powerful vocal (incredible vocal). I had the sense that it needed to be fat and dark...(I like the "idea" of it) I enjoyed both listens. floyd

I think the 1st version sounds more lonesome and soulful. More down and out. The 2nd version fuller and beautifully done makes me think of the platters. Like both equally. Cheers

Guenter Guenter, Thank you. Hi Lawrence, Have listened to both versions... The first version wins for me Voice and guitar are of course outstanding in both versions, but the second "orchestra" gets predictable after a while. And the first version sounds more like "stone drunk again" IMHE(xperience) G Fred Thanks for listening and commenting. Yes there is a repetitive thing happening with the piano. I like both versions too.. and I can see why you were looking for the arpeggiated instrumentation. But here are a couple of reasons why I prefer the original:
1) The arpeggiated thing has been done so many times it's hard to make it sound new, even when its wrapped in a clever new song like yours.

I'd kind of like to hear horns in the 2nd version since you opted to take it in a more orchestrated direction. Or not. Both versions are great! Thank you Pat. When I wrote this song I was trying to convey to a younger friend that he didn't have to try to reinvent the wheel every time he wrote a song. When I picked up my guitar this old 50's style just kind of came out and it was perfect for what I was tying to get across to him so I went all in with it and wrote this song. Hi Lawrence, We like this one very much, but the first version is very different from this one and is also very good. We don't know which one to choose.... so we'd better not Rob and Anne-Marie Thank you both. I think they each have their place. And I think it's great to be able to play around with different styles so easily with BIAB! What he said.
Excellent write. Killer vocal, as always.
The piano in the new version seems too "thin" to me - so it seems out of place in the production - against such a powerful vocal (incredible vocal). I had the sense that it needed to be fat and dark...(I like the "idea" of it)

floyd Thanks Floyd. The piano, bass and strings are midi from BIAB and rendered with the Dimension Pro soft synth that comes with Sonar. I didn't do much to them except roll off some low end on the bass and piano. I think the 1st version sounds more lonesome and soulful. More down and out. The 2nd version fuller and beautifully done makes me think of the platters. Like both equally. Cheers Thanks Rich, that's exactly what I was going for.

We're down with Tommy and Pat. They both expressed our thoughts very well re a somewhat preference for numero uno. However, you sing it so strongly that either version has HUGE appeal.
BTW, Janice wanted to point out the cool 60's slow dance vibe. ALTHOUGH unlike me she was a mere child then. She also says the first version is more gutsy...but then she's long been a blues gal.

Our albums and singles are on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora and more. If interested search on Janice Merritt. Thanks! Our Videos

Gruverider,
Great voice on you, brother. Is that your bluesy guitar I'm listening to now? Hey Tommy, watch your back!

Hi Gruverider,
What a fantastic song and vocals!
I like both versions but I prefer the original version. I like the Hendrix'esque backing guitar more than the piano arpeggio. Lovely guitar solo too, perfect fit for the song.
Superb! Rec

Superb! Rec Thank you for having a listen and for your kind words. There is something almost magical about Hendrix style chording.

Hi Lawrence, One of my favs of yours. Hard to choose could easily go either way. Agree with Rich - piano gives the song a Platters vibe. I think Pat had a great idea on adding horns if you go with the piano plus I might stick a little B3 in there too. I think this is one of those decisions only you can make - no pun intended with the only you. Josie

It's just too much fun (and easy with BIAB) to be able to present songs in in different forms to let an opportunity pass. And you made me smile with the pun!

I listened to both versions and think the first version fits the vibe and matches your lyrics best. I agree with others who've mentioned a Platters, Drifters feel about the second version and that vibe sort of disconnects with the lyrics.
Both versions match your vocals superbly and can stand on their own as separate songs. I suggest you make them separate songs. The Drifters produced a whole suite of songs of similar themes and used the same chord progressions.
Examining your lyrics, it should not take but a few minutes to sober up your main character and refocus him on the walk home in the cold rain. Think in terms that Country music likes stoned drunks, regardless of the reason and the Drifters and Platters were all about love.
Excellent work on both songs by the way.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
