Why is the thru channel missing from the piano roll window? Is it by design?

If not so it's a wishlist candidate IMO

I am looking at the window now and it has buttons named B,E,D,G,G,M,S, but no thru.

?

Because there is nothing recorded on the Thru track. It is there to allow you to either play along or record a part to either the melody or soloist track. As such, there is nothing there to edit on the Thru track.

This situation just got a lot worse. I tried to record A VST..

How on earth do you expect users to solve these kinds of Chinese Puzzles.

Just to make sure

What you just implied, maybe I'm being too literal here so forgive me if I am, was that you were:

Trying to insert a VST plugin (aka AUDIO plugin) onto a incoming MIDI stream on the Thru channel?

I confess I don't really understand the 'thru track' concept. It's confusing - you see it in the mixer but nothing is recorded on it?

I propose we have a 'user track' this can be an audio track or a MIDI track that can either record audio or MIDI, can load a VST, play it, record it, and see and edit the data. It's not too much to ask, pretty standard stuff.

the whole thing needs a redesign

Many MIDI capable devices have three MIDI ports

In - Out - Thru

'In' is what is received by the MIDI device
'Out' is what the MIDI device transmits
The 'Thru' is just a way of sharing what comes In with other devices, rather than terminating the connection. It sends the In to somewhere else: the Thru - but only if a connected to another module is required.

However, the way the BiaB implements MIDI Thru is somewhat not really clear, and therefore confusing

I suggested some years a go a graphical map that displayed the connections and device names between the inputs, outputs, VST's and internal synths used, and connectivity of different ports. Unfortunately, it didn't get a guernsey.

Yes VT I am familier with MIDI thru, but not as a blank track

The Thru track is what allows you to play along with BIAB in real time with specific track settings not dependent upon any other track settings (patch, VSTi, pan, volumes, et). When you connect your keyboard or other MIDI device to your computer, what you hear is based on how the Thru track is configured.

If you want to capture your performance, BIAB lets you record it to either the Melody or the Soloist track (essentially capturing what is coming through the Thru track and redirecting that MIDI data to either the Melody or Soloist track).

If you configure the Thru track with a specific VST and maybe added effects, that's what you'll hear when you record. What gets recorded, though is the MIDI data associated with what you played. You would need to configure the track you recorded to the same way as the Thru track to reproduce the performance.

That being said, there is a tie-in (and I'm not at my home computer, so I can't explain it properly), but if you already have a melody recorded and then you use the Thru track to record a soloist track, you won't hear the melody track while recorded the soloist track (or it might be the other way around, where if you have the soloist track recorded, you won't hear it while recording the melody - but I hope you get my point).

Of course, once you play back the recording, you'll hear both melody and soloist. What you hear on playback, however, depends on how you configured the melody and soloist track. Settings on the thru track do not carry through to those tracks when recording. (I wish there were an option to allow that to happen, as that would make recording much easier).

Again, the reason there is nothing recorded to the Thru track, is because it is the track that allows you to PLAY along with a MIDI instrument. The Record button is what captures that information to one of the other tracks.

I'm not sure how else to explain it.

Thank John for the detailed clarification. That actually explained it very well.

Yes John,
Thank you, that cleared up a lot of wool. Howver its left me thinking why so complex? why not simply a user track nad leave the melody and soliest tracks to themselves? After all they have a mute button?

Rehtorical questions of course.

John you know your stuff sir!
