Also, keep in mind that you are always free to use chord progressions from any song that's ever been written. There is no copyright on these.

Sometimes when I find a song I like, I run it through the Audio Chord Wizard and find out the song's chord progression. I then use that progression as a starting place for my own work. When I do this, I usually change key because it helps me avoid writing similar melodies (which are copyrighted).

Similar to what you mentioned, I too find myself gravitating to a set patterns of chords. Doing the above, helps free me from those chains because it opens new possibilities and shows me progressions that would never have occurred to me.
