My current amp set up at gigs is a Fender Super Champ XD (recommended by a PG music forum member a few years back) which I mike into my Bose L1 PA (through which I also play my BIAB backing tracks). I love the amp, but I'm looking for a little more bass response from my guitar (Fender Mustang) and amp. Fender sells a 1X12 speaker cabinet http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SupChampX2SC with a 1x12" Celestion G12P-80 speaker. I'm thinking of purchasing one to give my sound a little more "punch". Anyone tried this or have some thoughts. Thank You Frank

Frank, I don't own that particular amp, but I do use several Fender Amps in my studio. A couple are bass amps. I can truthfully say I've never had any problems with any of them and I've been very pleased with the sound quality. Only one thing that you may take into consideration. It weighs 28 lbs. and doesn't have wheels. If that's not a problem for you, the price and quality are excellent.

Frank, Here's an alternative: if you are looking for more bass consider replacing the Super Champ XD and extension cabinet with amp simulation/multi-fx unit. It will give you much more tonal/spectral control, and there will be a much lighter gigging solution in the end. You can take out the Super Champ XD - leave it at home basically, and swap in some kind of multi-fx/amp simulation. Take your pick on the brand, there's really no terrible makers of these. You'll be surprised at how much they sound like the classic amps. Nearly every brand, whether it's Digitech, Line6, Zoom, Boss, Vox, Fender, simulates the twin reverb, bassman, plexi, ac30, jc120, etc. A question I would have for you is how you end up mixing your amp sound with the L1 sound. Buying more speakers for the guitar amp can be counter-productive, as you add more 'punch' with the amp/cab combo, you are going to have to balance that with your sound from the L1/backing tracks/vox. You can do an easier job of controlling the whole mix out of the L1 just by itself by running amp simulation into it, instead of mic-ing the guitar amp. And it's going to lighten your overall load by probably 50 lb (if you leave the Super Champ XD and an expansion cabinet at home). Thanks Rockstar_not for all your info. However, I'd be a little overwhelmed with that level of complexity. I play 50's & 60's guitar instrumentals, so I'm basically looking for a good clean tube amp sound with a little slapback delay and spring reverb, which I accomplish now with a couple of pedals.The Super Champ XD gives me a great basic sound, I'm just looking for a little bit of enhancement for gigs.

I love the amp, but I'm looking for a little more bass response from my guitar (Fender Mustang) and amp. Fender sells a 1X12 speaker cabinet with a 1x12" Celestion G12P-80 speaker.
I'm thinking of purchasing one to give my sound a little more "punch". Anyone tried this or have some thoughts Absolutely... More than one time I have plugged up a larger speaker for that very reason. The bigger the cone, the more air you move.....add more cones and you move more air.... why do you think the 4x12 cabs are so popular? They can move lots of air. Since it's got a dual tube output section, you can plug up the celestion and now you are running a totally different sounding speaker and one that is larger as well. I noticed that the amp only has one speaker jack in the pics I could find... so you are relegated to an "either/or" situation. In my years of club gigs and playing on all sorts of amps.... generally, tube outputs are more forgiving of impedance mis-matches than solid state outputs. I would be very cautious about dropping the impedance of a Solid State amp below it's rated limits.... but for an eight ohm tube amp.... I would consider wiring another jack into the amp or the extension cab so you can run them both..... I've done that and the difference in the sound is quite nice. You get more bottom end in the sound. After all, you're moving almost twice the air....and as long as you're not running the amp wide open, you won't have any problems with it overheating or anything else. My stage setup in the last band I played live with...a house band gig for two and a half years was as follows. I use a Mesa Boogie Studio 22... it outputs 22 nominal watts into a 12" 8 ohm speaker. I plugged in a Jenson 15 in an old Fender single speaker cab from the amp.... that gave me a 4 ohm load on the Mesa. From the line out, I ran a signal cable into a DCA 800 Carvin stereo power amp that had a jumper to feed the same signal to both sides of the stereo amp. Each side of the amp could deliver 400w to 8 ohms. Each side powered a Lab Series 4x12 cabinet rated 8 ohms and 200w. The DCA was never turned up more than 30% to 40%. This was more for the ambiance on stage as opposed to filling the room. Everything was mic'd into the PA. The cabs were split...one on my side and one on the other guitar player's side. He could adjust the level of the cabinet on his side to the level he wanted to hear. That was a sweeeeet sounding rig...and my favorite of all the amps and speakers I have ever used live. I could crank the little 22w Boogie to get the tone and growl I wanted and it wasn't loud... With the Jensen at the front, I could hear my guitar and could easily get some sustained, controlled feedback as I needed...again, without being loud. And for stage fill volume, I simply dialed up or down the DCA channel A. That 4x12 cab provide lots of thump and low end response without having to part people's hair in the first 12 rows. Yep.... more cones = better low end response. Do it!!

I hear the 'complexity' comment often, and then I see these guys' pedal boards with multiple delays, multiple chorus pedals, multiple distortion/overdrive pedals, and they have to play a tap dance between songs in the sets.
I use ONE patch 90% of the time on my Zoom G5 and I spent way less than the cost of about 3 average priced pedals, plus it's a recording interface if I need to use it that way.
My audio cable count: 1 15' 1/4" from guitar to Zoom G5. I carry a 15' XLR but I rarely use it because I'm almost always plugging into the house PA. using their cabling, 1 15' stereo headphone extension cable to plug into the in-ear monitor system.
Other cables: 3' 1/4 TRS for the optional tap-tempo pedal for the G5 a short A/C extension cable and the wall-wart for the G5.
Total weight of the G5 and cables is about 10 pounds.
To me, it's way less complex than pedals, cables, and about 75-100 lbs of speakers/amps.
