I like older versions of Movie Maker better than Movie Maker Live.
If you have or have access to someone with a Canon, Nikon DSLR camera, you can get much better quality video and sound using one over any of the phone/Ipad cameras. The camera sensors are larger and of higher quality as well as all of the 'camera' features are available such as white balance, the scene setting presets, shutter control, aperture control, exposure control, including bracketing, and lens interchangeability and record in HD.
The built in microphone and audio circuitry is a bit better than a phone/camera but DSLR's have a dedicated audio input and there are boom mics available to mount on the camera body that provide superior recording. The audio input will also take a feed from a mixer or some other high quality sound source.
The season finale of the popular TV show House was filmed in HD entirely with the Canon 5D Mark II.

Personally, I don't use Movie Maker - like Joanne said it was too basic. True... Movie maker is just about the most basic stripped down video maker out there... I recommended it to Carolyn exactly for that reason. She mentioned that she wants to make a slide show, and for that purpose, Movie Maker is "functional enough" Plus, the fact that it's free and she probably already has it gives her the chance to wrap her head around the idea before she drops any cash. And the basic concepts in movie maker are the same as in other video programs, so time spent learning it wouldn't be wasted if she gets comfortable, want more functionality, and decides to pony up for a better program. Its been my personal experience that starting the learning curve on a program with lots of features and possibilities can be so overwhelming that I give up. Again, speaking only for myself, simple is the way to start.

Yes, you can get older versions of Movie Maker. Also, if Carolyn wants to do a 'slide' show, that is also easily done, including audio, with PowerPoint.
Pat, I was editing my initial post as you posted yours. I've added some notes regarding better video quality.

I'm not sure if it will export to a video format that can be posted on youtube though... and that's probably what most people would do with a music video

Camtasia Studio can do everything you want and more. Wow, I forgot about that one. I have a CD of an old version laying around somewhere. I used to use it for computer training presentations and converted them to Shockwave videos for web.

Yep, it's very good. While it's designed for screen capture for presentations, it imports video in most formats, has multi-track audio and video, fades, transitions, overlays, graphics and much more, is it exceptionally easy to use. Stacks of help and support is available with easy to follow user guides.
My company uses it for training, marketing, video presentations and much more. Very powerful.
Best Trevor
