Guten Tag,

Please pardon me for writing in English in the Deutsches forum. I will also include a Google translation. My name is Tobin Frank, and I'm involved in the development of RealTracks for Band-in-a-Box. We may have the opportunity to record some traditional German "Volksmusik", and I was hoping to get opinions from people as to whether they would like to see styles like this, and if they had any suggestions for specific styles in this genre that they might like.

Ideally, I would love to see suggestions accompanied by youtube videos that show exactly what you have in mind.

thank you very much!
Tobin

Idealerweise würde ich gerne Anregungen begleitet von YouTube-Videos , die zeigen, was Sie im Kopf haben zu sehen .

Hi Tobin,

difficult, while multidimensional, question. I will in a separate post try to find some videos for you. Even though Germany, and I do include here politically not quite correct our neighbors in Austria and Switzerland, is rather small, it is quite diverse.

The majority of what we're exposed to is Alpine type volksmusik that expands way down into Croatia, Serbia, and Italy.

For whatever reason YouTube is not available at the moment.

Here http://www.br.de/mediathek/video/sendungen/musik-in-den-bergen-104.html are several TV shows from the Bavarian TV (Bayerischer Rundfunk = Bavarian Broadcasting), I hope you can see them. The shows focus on the music of the general Alpine region giving samples of traditional (Volksmusik) and contemporary folkmusic (volkstümliche Musik).

You will know and hear the difference.

Traditional instruments are:
zither
hammered dulcimer
acoustic gutsting guitar usually fingerpicked accompaniment
tuba
trumpet and other horns
diatonic accordion with buttons

This conludes part one.

Guido

Edit: misspelled word "accompaniment" corrected

Hi Tobin,

"Traditionelle Volksmusik" -> good question and some fine effort to expand the range of BiaB.

I do admire the effort Guido already put into this thread and I am sure I cannot add substantial contributions off the cuff to the above list.

I'd suggest, though, putting your effort onto somewhat more solid grounds via contacting one or the other musicologist, say. "Traditionelle deutsche Volksmusik" covers a wide range – musicologists should have some sort of canonical collections right at their fingertips.

Best wishes for your endeavor

Hi Tobin,

I just logged into the forum to post an answer to your request before being aware of your PM. Sorry for not answering earlier – I often check on the forum, but only when posting something I do log in and have a chance seeing any PMs.

The term "Traditionelle deutsche Volksmusik" is not squarely defined.

Do you mean 'really traditional music', such as Schlaflied by Brahms 'Guten Abend, Gute Nacht …' (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guten_Abend,_gut'_Nacht) or 'Die Forelle' by Schubert (http://www.volksliederarchiv.de/text6359.html). While this may be seen more in the classical realm, it sure would be 'Volksmusik'.

A little more recent Volksmusik may be similar to 'Wenn die bunten Fahnen wehen …' (http://www.volksliederarchiv.de/text1265.html, http://www.myvideo.de/watch/8386129/Heino_Wenn_die_bunten_Fahnen_wehen_2002).

There are a wide variety of typical German folk songs from this type of genre fringing on s.th. that may be called 'Schlager' or sort of 'Hit songs' in more American coinage. A more modern representantive may be Helene Fischer (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb1aMK8LW3o). Albeit dubbed Volksmusik this would be definitely more in the realm of pop or whatnot, yet safely denoted 'Schlager' in German. Nena got some international recognition (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIvO51PwNvs, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRFyKRlPfEg). There are endless more examples.
A giant on the German 'Schlager' sky is the late Udo Jürgens (just a Google shot here –> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9d33YUILvQ, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgY3rtE5_VU).

Typical contemporary Schlager charts may be found on the net, e.g. -> http://www.oljo.de/deutsche-schlager-charts/top100-hitparade-deutschland.html.

You may also be interested in some other type of typical traditional Volksmusik, sometimes dubbed 'Biergartenmusik' or 'German Blasmusik' (just a blind shot via Google here -> e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NZVkJmdcVo, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zob_OuEyDvM).

So it may basically boil down to what your intentions are. Are you heading towards a more educational aspect addressing classical and 'real traditional' Volksmusik, or are you interested addressing these many Schlager buffs in Germany. The hitch with these Schlager buffs may be that Schlager aficionados are more used to consuming music, not so much to creating music. Musicians or music students interested in creating Schlager music are probably well served with some of your pop RealTracks. Yet you could pick some particularly prominent German Schlager and go with them.

Or are you interested in creating business opportunities supporting these many 'Blasorchester' in Germany, best translated via brass bands or wind bands.

I could imagine that many young brass instrument students would very much welcome some 'zünftige' RealTracks resembling 'zünftiger Blasmusik'. 'Zünftig' is an often used German term denoting something real proper, hearty and genuine and particularly often used in traditional context.

The scope of traditional German 'Volksmusik' is very much greater than the scope of 'Schlager'. The term Schlager maybe seen as a subset of the term Volksmusik.
In contrast to your post here on the forum, Tobin, in your PM you've explicitely mentioned interest in German Schlager. I am sure we get quite some suggestions to specific typical German Schlager by fellow forum members.

Best wishes

Tobins Anfrage via PM vom 04.03.2015, in der er nach einer geeigneten Übersetzung fragt:

"Hello everybody! We may have the opportunity to record some Volksmusik or Schlager RealTracks for a future Band-in-a-Box release. We would love to hear from any of you who might have specific requests for styles in this genre. If you have suggestions, youtube links to the kinds of music you have in mind would be great."

Übersetzung:

Hallo Alle!

Hi Tobin,
1) here are some youtube links for German Volksmusik I like. I would be happy to find those styles in BiB.
Most of the songs are sung by Hannes Wader:

He has released several CDs with “Volksliedern”:

• Hannes Wader singt Volkslieder, ASIN: B0000085AG
• Hannes Wader singt Arbeiterlieder, ASIN: B0000085AE

smile 2) International folklore is very interesting too. For example, Italian tarantella, Greek music (in the style of Mikis Theodorakis):

Many thanks to everyone who replied! I apologize for not coming back to this post sooner, but we've taken all of your suggestions, and some Alpine-style RealTracks are in the works!

I hope you had a chance to talk to real live musicians about that topic in Frankfurt.

If I'd known a little bit earlier, I would have come to meet you in person.
