[Link no longer valid]
This is where my head was at musically back around 2000-2004. I wrote a few songs like this back then. Some of them have survived several computer crashes. And as I took this one from a back up file this February to dust off and remix my computer crashed!!!
So here it is finally. There are no BIAB tracks as the song has at least two meters in it and one of them is 7/8. It was a bear to mix and my (new) computer had trouble processing all of the data so there are some pops and clicks. The tracks were all written and played on my old Korg X3 then rendered with Sonar's Dimension synth.
I am very interested to know what musical influences you hear in this song.
Skipping
Will you be mine forevermore We are souls like stones, skipping across the lakes of time The hope we’ll find on distant shores Roll your bones, funny how the days unwind
Past your prime, sharp decline We are cliffs of stone sharing empty hearts of brine You take yours, I’ll take mine Let the pebbles dropped send ripples across the line
We are souls like stones We are souls like stones
Be wary of the hearts you break Ghost filled dreams will haunt you till the day you die The souls you rend, the steps you take Footfalls trace the path right back to your demon eyes
Past your prime, sharp decline We are cliffs of stone sharing empty hearts of brine You take yours, I’ll take mine Let the pebbles dropped send ripples across the line
We are souls like stones We are souls like stones We are souls like stones We are souls like stones

This is a nice piece of work. Excellent vocals all around on this one.
I'm sorry I can't provide any musical influences I hear because I didn't follow this genre in the past. I've been introduced to so many different genres since joining the BB forum that I would have never stopped on a radio station back in the day.
I like your song and performance.
Thanks for posting.

Hello Lawrence,
What a musical work!!!
I heard it on souncloud this morning, and I couldn't get an understanding on the meters. 7/8 I had discovered, but maybe a 6/8 at times? and/or a 4/4?
I listened several times to see a bit trough the song. Despite it's complexity it doesn't feel unnatural or forced. It shows your great musical capabilities and background. The mix is exellent!
Mmusical influences... I would say Genesis certainly, curious to what others are gonna add...
I enjoyed it thouroughly!
Fred

Whoa!!! Tripping for sure. I couldn't get a handle on the time signature at first, then I fell in the gruve. The vocals, mix and arrangement are first class. Influences- no clue. I have never heard anything like this before but i surely am going back for another listen. This must have taken considerable time to get it to this level. Outstanding work!!! I am a huge fan. Tom

Brilliant music!! I love it. Great arrangement. Love the sweeping synth texture, and different time signature. If I would change anything, I'd make the vocal a little wetter (possibly a touch louder), and a rounder (and maybe wetter) snare sound. To me, I hear a YES influence. Very, very cool stuff!! Take care. Greg

Super cool, Lawrence.
Awesome production. (I did not like the snare roll that popped up a number of times - but that's a very little thing - loved everything else). Excellent write.
Very original. You could have toured with this group. Sort of YES meets ELO meets CSNY meets Sting and some early Genesis... all mixed up together to create something new...

Fred Fred, It begins in 4/4 and the body is mostly 7/8 except for the "skipping" silent brakes most have 3 beats. Glad that you enjoyed it. Whoa!!! Tripping for sure. wow! What a groove. Really suits your nick. Great lyrics and vocals. I'm just listening a second time and it won't be the last.

floyd Thanks for listening Floyd. Yes the snare roll was a bit of a trick to pull off. Multiple midi notes separated by milliseconds and adjusted velocities from low to high. I continue to search for odd meter drum loops I love writing in 7/8 and 5/4. That's one heck of a band there!

Very cool! Totally different than what we've heard from you so far. We detect (apart from the 70s and 80s influences) a little bit of Genesis and other symphonic rock acts from those days.

You did a great job on this.
I hear AOR (album oriented rock) like Moody Blues, Tull, Wakeman, and Yes.

Something quite out of left field. Interesting polyrhythms, and definitely a bit technically challenging. I could hear a bit of Jethro Tull in there somewhere(!)

Rob & Anne-Marie Thank you for listening. I listened to a lot of those bands - Yes, Rush, King Crimson ... You did a great job on this.

I hear a lot of King Crimson. Maybe very early Pink Floyd. Used to be my favorite night sailing music. Maybe a touch of Rick Wakeman at the beginning. The meters sound very comfortable. Very well done nostalgic sound. Cheers.

Hi Lawrence.
I think this is brilliant!
I can see that it might have taken a bit of putting together and the mix must have been tricky, but the end product is first class.
Influences? Well, certainly the 80s and really you could just pick any of the New Romantics from that era. Loved every minute and it transported me back in time for a few minutes.

My goodness Lawrence, when this first started I had to check back to SC that I was listening to one of your songs. So very different. That swirling synth thingy is something else. I agree a touch of Moody Blues here. Great production.

Even before I read Josie's spot on comment I heard Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull). I've listened to similar genres over the years but I'm way too much of a musical rube to make intelligent comments on the rhythmic structures and signatures. I will say that we both found it fascinating and, wow, what a departure from your Americana signature that we have become so used to.
Awesome.

Very well done nostalgic sound. Cheers. I miss sailing! We use to sail lake Pontchartrain back in the early 2000's but Katrina took my buddies boat and then we both moved away. Thanks for listening. Thank you. I was heavy into that prog rock for a long time. Even before I read Josie's spot on comment I heard Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull). Thanks for listening. When I first moved to Texas in '06 I didn't know anything about Americana and it took me some time to "get it". I didn't like it at first and then I heard Townes. I was hooked.
