This should be mandatory reading for all of us. Unfortunately for me I found The Recording Revolution too late!

Yep. That's me; lots of want but not much need.

I also appreciate the comment about making the recording space more creative. In my case I need to concentrate on making the space more efficent and tidy.

I saw that this morning Mario since you got me hooked on the site now.

Of course I just dropped coin on the bigger Focusrite interface so there goes my spending.

It is nice not to have to patch cables all the time though so the extra $$$ was worth it for me.

Odd to me that he doesn't bump up the price to include a cheap set of monitors. Mixing with cans is not everybody's cup of tea. I'm guessing that he assumes whatever computer speakers you have will serve that purpose. Dunno. I have a relatively cheap set up. Blue Icicle USB interface for the mike, Logic Pro, and bottom tier KRK's. I consider the KRK's critical to what I do FWIW, etc.

Efficient?

Tidy?

Those are two words that are not in my vocabulary grin

Same here. I dropped a bundle on a Roland Octa-Capture. But I have recorded up to 6 different sources at once. I think the moral of the story is to buy only what you need.

I found Graham's site awhile ago and he has changed the way I look at this hobby. I have spent way too much money on my studio. It's like fishing, I have thousands of dollars wrapped up in rods, gear, lures etc. and most of the time when I go fishing I use a small fraction of what I have. The kicker is I tend to use the same gear and lures consistently and have no problems consistently catching fish.

My studio is the same way. I have gotten way better at recording and mixing (at least in my mind) by using less gear and plug ins and learning the craft as opposed to finding the next greatest thing that will magically make all my songs sound better. That being said I'm a sucker for good marketing and find it hard to resist picking up the latest and greatest gadget in the hopes that one click does it all.

$300 for a studio is not realistic... IMHO

The writer states that for that
Quote:
$300 gives you a great sounding audio interface (preamp + converters), a studio quality mic, headphones, mic cable, mic stand, and pop filter, and very capable recording software.

I'd hesitate to call that "studio quality" at that price....

Just a quick price check for the components in my studio

Focusrite interface: $300.... there goes the budget.
DAW software: $70 on a cross grade upgrade.
Rode NT-2A studio quality mic: $400
Yamaha bargain bin headphones: $35
Mackie MR5 speakers: $350

Yeah, I think a more realistic budget for a small but quality home studio setup is closer to that $1000 price mark....give or take a bit.

Is it possible to get started for $300? Absolutely, it is.

Graham's site continually mentions that home recording studios can mix & master on a real budget, but I agree with Herb and others that there is a practical bottom line for this, and I think the Recording Revolution statements and suggestions are often lower than the minimum realistic requirements if 'reasonable' results are required.

Heck, I can't even call mine a "studio." I have two self-powered monitors that serves as my mac speakers and "studio" monitors. I have a Rodes NT mic that I bought 12 years ago and a $38 XRL to USB interface. The rest of the money is in software. And that is it. Now back in the analogue days I had a wall full.
