I decided to re-install BIAB 2011.

But BIAB 2011 isn't cooperating.

I was asked what type of installation I wanted.
I chose Advanced (Custom) because I will be installing to a USB drive, and only selected components.

So I get to the part where it says:
Setup requires at least 42G of free space to install, but the selected drive has only 11G. Do you want to continue anyway?

Well hold on a second there buddy!!!!

Did you EVER ask me which drive I wanted to install to?
NO!
And why didn't you????

I have my 160G USB drive plugged in ready to go for installation. How about recognizing it or asking me if I want to install to it???

BIABGuy,

It's been so long since I installed 2011 that I cannot remember.

If I recall correctly, it's not a matter of clicking on a drive for installation. It involves either typing in the path or navigating to the drive and folder that you'd like it installed to.

If you have 2011 on the PG Music USB drive, all you should need to do is to copy the files across to the second USB drive and then run the install (choosing the minimum install option) so that BIAB installs the necessary fonts, drivers, etc.

Regards,
Noel

Now I'm even more confused. In one of your other threads, you said you already had BIAB 2011, and you just bought 2015 Pro. You received advice to install 2015 over 2011.

So you chose to reinstall 2011?

We are just trying to help, and my advice in the other thread stands: Before you get any further, I suggest you contact PG Music Support and have them work this out with you.

Why does BiaB give you such a hard time? My wife figured it out. It's because it can smell fear wink

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

And sorry I can't offer anything other than hopefully a grin.

You are likely referring to the 160GB USB drive that came with Biab, so there would be no point to installing to it, because it is already installed to that drive.

if you want to install to another drive, you can do that, and if you encounter any problem, just abandon the install, and just copy the BB folder from the BB USB drive to wherever you want.

As an aside, if you already have a 160GB BB hard drive of bb 2011, and space is a premium on your other drives, you should consider installing your BB 2015 upgrade to that BB 2011 drive, which will upgrade that. There is no point in preservng a big BB 2011 installation, in a system that is low on available hard drive space.

Unfortunately, it's also not a matter of:
"either typing in the path or navigating to the drive and folder that you'd like it installed to."

BIAB 2011 doesn't give the opportunity to type in any path or navigate to the drive. frown

Yes I do have 2011 on the PG Music USB drive.
However, the method you suggest above is not one that is supplied by PG Music during the installation process.
They give several options, but not the one you mention.

Furthermore, I wanted to to a selective installation, choosing only those parts that I would be using.

Sorry for the confusion Matt.
I was going to install 2015 over 2011, but at the last minute I decided to preserve my 2011 installation and do a new 2015 installation to an external USB drive.

Of course, as the 2015 is an upgrade, I have to install 2011 to the external USB first.

I did contact PG support yesterday.
Their advice was to re-name my BIAB2011, BB and install 2015 to that folder.

No, I am referring to my own personal 160G USB hard drive, that is freshly formatted and ready to go.

But Peter, you should know that you can't install to another drive if you use the Setup.exe provided. It never provides you with an opportunity to chose another drive.

And it certainly never pops up a screen saying "I see you have encountered a problem with the installation. Perhaps you are trying to install to an external USB drive? If so, just copy the BB folder from the BB USB drive to your external drive. Easy peasy!"

Yes I do have a 160G drive of BB 2011 and space is certainly a premium for me now on my main hard drive.
Istalling the BB 2015 upgrade to my BB 2011 installation is also what the PG tech guy recommended yesterday on the phone.

However, I would like to install to an external USB drive now, to see how that goes and possibly delete the 2011 main drive installation if everything works out.

OK, I'm following now. Yes, you would want to do a fresh install of your 2011 to your own new clean external drive. Then you want to install the 2015 upgrade over that.

Yes, the Setup.exe does give you an opportunity to specify the target drive. I don't know why you aren't seeing that.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if your drive is big enough. I don't know the size of the regular BIAB version; I'm working with the (much) larger audiophile version. Perhaps someone can comment if a 160 GB drive is sufficient size?

When you start fresh, I highly recommend using BB as the folder name on the root of your new drive. This is the default installation location for BIAB and it will save you having to change the name every time you update.

When you are all done and everything works, you can always manually delete the other BIAB folders on other drives as needed.

Matt,

A USB 160 GB drive is what BIAB the EverythingPak is shipped on (at least in the days of 2011 it was). The size is large enough.

160GB is plenty sufficient for BIAB 2011 with 2015 ProPak on top.

I think the problem you are having with folder selection is that I don't believe it appears until after the initial screens where you select what you want to install.

I've never had a problem with that, either from USB drive or DVD media (and believe me, I have installed every single version since v8, as per my recent post about the "Evolution of PGMusic").

After talking to 1.5 PG Music tech reps, I believe I have gotten to the bottom of my most recent problem.

Here's what happened.
When I was trying to install onto my clean 160G USB drive last night I chose the 4th option; 'Custom installation'.

Right after that screen, I was presented with a screen asking if I wanted to:
-Install fonts
-Install plugins
-Install BIAB and Realband to another drive
-Copy RT and RD folders to another drive

Right after that screen, BIAB sized up my c: drive, and found it had only 11G space left. It said BIAB required 40G space.
It then asked if I wanted to proceed or cancel the installation.

What would you do in a situation like that?
I know what I would do. Cancel the installation.
That's what I did and posted about it here.

Today after I told a tech rep that I wanted to do an installation to my 160G USB drive, they advised me to choose the 3rd option; 'Normal 40G installation and yada yada".

It didn't complain about lack of disk space and allowed me to choose where I wanted to install BIAB2011.

I have just completed 2011 installation and will attempt my 2015 installation shortly.

Even though it told you you didn't have enough space (confusing, I know), had you not cancelled and gone on, it would have asked you where you wanted to install it and you could have specified your external USB drive (with plenty of space).

I think the issue is that the message should have said "you only have xxx GB available on your C: drive, which isn't enough". But the custom install does allow you to go on and specify whichever drive you wish.

Right you are John!

Just out of curiosity, and perhaps jeopardizing a good installation, after I installed 2011 yesterday I went back and
started setup.exe to see what would happen if I went beyond the 'cancel' button when it said I didn't have enough space on c:

Sure enough, the next screen asked where I wanted to install BIAB.

So the only recommendation I would make to PG Music about this, is that they either:

-pop up warning messages about insufficient disk space after the screen asking where you wish to install the program, or

-include in the warning message a note that the next screen will provide the opportunity to install to a drive other than c:
