Really? I guess maybe I'm too new here. I thought this would be the one place TO discuss it. Just in a song-writing/could end your career kind of way.

Do you think I should just pull the post?

No need to pull it from my perspective. I knew nothing about the controversy and found it an interesting read. Not provocative in the negative sense but thought provoking.

That's kind of how I felt too. I guess, I was thinking of it purely from a song writers perspective.

I also think it's a good warning to we who write. It's not what you say, it's what the people hear.

Just read about this on another forum about 10 minutes ago! I am not sure what to think. Radio stations are commercial enterprises. If their customers don't want them to do something, it might be best that they don't do that.

I don't think Little Big Town will be hurt by this -- the record label will just release a different radio single. On the bigger issues, I am not that interested in taking a public opinion one way or the other.

Just read the article.

Why would any thinking person be surprised by the response? We ALL know that "perception is reality".

Effective communication is one of the single most difficult skills to master. Ensuring that your audience is hearing what you're saying instead of what they want you to say is a great challenge.

Add to that the ambiguity inherent in poetry and song writing and you have a recipe for misunderstanding.

No, this does not surprise me at all.

Oh, and for what it's worth, on reading the first 2 lines I thought it was about lesbianism too. Even by the end of the first verse I still wasn't certain it wasn't, even though the concept of jealousy had by then been introduced.

Personally I think the word choices were very poor from an effective communications perspective, UNLESS, despite claims to the contrary, they actually wanted the lesbian overtones to have traction.

I just think this is hilarious. I was in a country band for 5 years, everybody was pretty conservative. They're good people but there were things we didn't agree on. That never stopped me from making good friends anyway.

Here in LA I'm also very good friends with some super liberals who I don't agree with on certain things either. I'm one of those who has one foot in both camps and this is an example of pick your audience carefully. And yeah, this could be an example of "All publicity is good publicity".

1. The writers (Liz Rose, Lori McKenna and Hillary Lindsey) are ALL intelligent, successful writers who write intelligent, successful songs. They KNEW the lyric was suggestive.

2. Little Big Town KNEW the lyric was suggestive when they decided to record the song.

3. The record company KNEW the lyric was suggestive and would cause controversy (read "talk" or "press"). They may be idiots, but they aren't stupid.

This is calculated every step of the way.

The video has had 2 Million views - and it has no video - it is just the audio. The song is SELLING like hotcakes.
Parents (or just Old People) are complaining. The KIDS (who are the ones who spend money on music) are buying it. They don't care. They accept it. Half of the shows on TV now have same-sex relationships of main characters. (it doesn't matter that that is not what the song is actually about...)

The song also proves (once again) that it is the women of Country (both the writers and the singers) who are putting out well written songs. First thing I've heard on Country radio in a LONG time that was worth actually listening to the lyric...

On a side note... the Lyric video has had another 646,000 hits. IT IS A VERY CLEVER LYRIC VIDEO. I think some of our Showcase Video makers could do something similar... R&AM... Joanne...Bob...Josie...

Very well said Floyd. Wonderful lyric video too!

Edited to add: The success of the song and video despite being shunned by the radio stations only goes to show that radio is not as all powerful as it used to be. VIVA to the new model...what we want to listen to when we want to listen to it.

I listened to the song and watched the video before reading the article and to me it was pretty obvious what the song was actually about early on in the lyrics.

Country music fans have a pretty high percentage of the religious right in their group, and everyone knows how intolerant the religious right is of anything they think relates to gay or lesbian causes. What does make it kind of funny is they’re showing their ignorance since that’s not what the song is about. But they are a VERY vocal bunch and radio stations are sensitive to a bunch of Christians calling in and raising a ruckus.

It’s their way or the highway to hell! Hehe.

Live and let live, I say. I couldn’t care less about what other consenting adults are doing or who they’re doing it with.

Interesting article

In fact, Fairchild jokes, “Maybe the real controversy is that a 6/8 ballad is on country radio.”
Haha

I totally agree with floyd's post especially

And I had forgotten about Jim Stafford's absolutely brilliant "My girl Bill" Thank you jford for the reminder!

It is the mind the words go into, not the mouth from which they came that can sometimes cause trouble.

After listening to this song, the melody immediately was stuck in my brain…

As I was humming it, the lyrics “love him till your arms break, then he lets you down~~~” came to mind. ??? Where did this come from? Then I realized (google is my friend) that this was song popular in the 80’s called “It’s a Heartache” by Bonnie Tyler.

The melody to “Girl Crush” is strikingly similar.

I just wonder whether the majority of those who want this song banned have ever listened to it in its entirety.

Many times there are people boycotting something just because a perceived opinion leader requires it.
