There is a normal USB on the side of the keyboard on the one I have.
I've not tried the mini-USB charging port for USB. The USB on the side of the keyboard has performed well for me (I did see you wanted to use it as a tablet only, but can only offer my experiences).

I would not recommend this model for performance though; better to get a Surface.
My T100 runs forever on a charge and runs Windows 8.1 (and allows for some pretty cool features for such a little thing) .. but when it crashes it can be quite a while to reboot. I've had to 'Reset' it enough times I keep my Live ID info in my wallet, so I can authenticate the OS and get it reloaded. This requires a working PC, so if it happened during performance it could be a nightmare.

Just my experience.
FWIW we have 3 in the house. They are cool for what they are, but if in a situation where I had to rely on it for performance it would make me very nervous.
Surface Pro's, on the other hand, have amazed me with reliability under pressure.
