Okay, it looks like the best solution for the IK Multimedia products conundrum is "Reaper"; see http://www.reaper.fm/ . The non-commercial license is only 60.00 USD, which puts it well within the sphere of affordability. Also, it will dovetail very nicely with PG Music products rather than compete with them, because BIAB and PT are very strong MIDI players, and Reaper's main lack appears to be its comparatively limited MIDI functionality.

I've tried Reaper and intend to become a licensed user -- but I remain a faithful proponent of PG Music's library of fine, moderately-priced music software.
