Paul... I see you're new to BB or at least to the forums...... Welcome.

I tried to do what you are attempting very early and met with various levels of frustration trying to figure it out.

What I'm suggesting here is based on how I work. You might find it useful, and then again, you might not.

I use BB strictly as a composing tool. It's where I write the song and get the structure, tempo, key, etc ready. It's where I build the foundation for things that will follow in later steps and stages of the song project.

Once that's done, to my satisfaction, I render the tracks in Real Band and export them to my DAW (Sonar) where I do the production. This is where the solo gets put in, and the other production things..... where the fiddle fill and the piano fill gets brought to the spotlight....

Have a listen to the songs I have done this way on my link.....

It's not the only way to work and get things done, just the way I work to get things done.

To address a few other things.... there is NO WAY currently to get the Real Tracks (RT) to play a melody that you devised. You can get some amazing solo's that will jam around the chord progression but it will not follow your melody. You can do that by using MIDI and selecting a synth to play, lets say, a piano part that carries the melody.

To get the soloist to only play in certain bars, you should consider the things I mentioned above. In a DAW, you can use envelopes to bring instruments in and out automatically as you need, in order to get a 4 bar solo in a specific area.

Listen to the songs on my website.... that's exactly how I do the solo's and the fills.

hope this helps.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
