Hi all

This song is based around the great depression.
Amazing what some had to do to survive.
Hope you like it all comments welcome.
Rob.

Needed you too long

Needed you too long

Wont you stop staring at that sweet gal of mine.
We been together since nineteen thirty nine.
She,s always standing bye me she's never gone.
Honey I've needed you too long.

Sleeping under bridges hiding in old barns.
We'd steal some chicken eggs from someones farm
We're always getting bye don't do no wrong.
Honey I've needed you too long.

your just the sweetest breath of air.
When your here I never have a care

Bridge

We'll walk beside the highway try and hitch a ride.
We'll ride an old dodge truck be warm inside.
You'll whistle you are my sunshine I'll sing the song.
Honey I've needed you too long.

Down bye railway tracks in the freezing rain.
You slipped while we were running fell neath the train.
I held you tightly to me your hair so blonde
Honey I've needed you too long.

Rob,

A good choice of style/instruments for your subject.

Good mix and a fitting vocal. An interesting write (a surprising ending! really caught me off guard).

I found this puzzling. Did he save her or was that "it" for her. The song has a sweet, sentimental feel but takes on a lot darker tone if she dies. That would be an interesting contrast with the happy music and story to that point (something they might play in horror film). Really like the feel, recording, mix, and instrument selection for the style. Just thrown a little by that verse. Very nicely done!! Take care. Greg

My wife was disappointed with the ending and asked if I was going to make her die?
Wont answer this fully as there is a comment further below.

Many thanks Floyd.

Hi Greg..
I wrote this around people known back then as tramps.
They often traveled in railway freight cars to get from place to place to find work.
So I tried some how to include this in the song.

(A tramp is a long-term homeless person who travels from place to place as a vagrant, traditionally walking all year round. The term "tramp" became a common way to refer to such people in 19th-century Britain and America.)

To tell you the truth I don't even know if this lady dies.
Due to my wife reaction to the lyric I felt it best to let the listener decide.

I hope the verse didn't throw you too much but I guess Im happy with your reaction.
Not that I'm sadistic.

Ive killed a few characters off in songs with no lack of protest from my wife..
I think she stands firmly on your side.

Thank you for your comments Greg.

Another good and enjoyable listen. You have a nice diverse repertoire of material and I imagine a lot of influences from over the years.

hi Rob. Nice and cruisy.
Lulled into a false sense of security and then surprise.
A mystery ending. Good one. Cheers.

Interesting song. You use some interesting styles.

This fits quite well to what you were looking to accomplish. Depression era music....

The first two verses had me thinking this was about a hobo and his dog.... not too many women would put up with the situation described in those verses..... stealing eggs, living under bridges ..... at least very few that I know. But since a dog can't whistle..... that kinda blew that line of thought. Reading the comments by others and you.... at least I have the hobo part right.

Nice job on this

Mercifully 1939 was the last year of
The Great Depression in the US...
at least officially. Both my parents
and all my grandparents suffered
through it.

This is a nice write and a very effective
vocal and arrangement for the tune.
I would never have thought of using
a dixleland band for such a song --
but dang it works really well.

Oh, and the mystique is very cool.

Good one!!

That was my Gran parents era.
Don't know how they did it.

Rob this is really a great song! Because I'm late everything has already been said so all that I can add is that I really enjoyed this toe tapper!

Enjoyed the song. Like the mix and production, but I'm also a bit puzzled by the last verse. I think she lived, but I'm not sure.

My favorite lines:

'Sleeping under bridges hiding in old barns.
We'd steal some chicken eggs from someones farm
We're always getting bye don't do no wrong.
Honey I've needed you too long.'
