HTL, am I correct in assuming that creating jingles is what you do?

Yes indeed. It's been my sole livelihood for 20 years and counting.

That's some great basic info!

I'm going to go a step further and say it's REALLY important to know the basics. Some writers starting out will write a 1m 15s jingle...or something odd amount of time making it almost unusable.

Nice share!

Any high profile jingles that we may have heard? Or is there enough demand at the local level to keep a person employed full time writing jingles?

One thing of note here is that on rare occasions a jingle has not been created by a professional, the story goes that a certain food manufacturer put out a competition which resulted in some housewife somewhere writing "A million housewives every day, pick up a tin of beans and say---" Though I doubt the same housewife also wrote the music that backed it.

That now brings me to another point that some jingles aren't musical and are just a catch phrase really, I think everyone will know where "It does exactly what it says on the tin" came from.

However in both cases they are memorable, in the first instance a catchy and very simple rhyming verse, in the second, it combines what is common sense, with the element of truth about the product!

I wonder how far you could get with a fictional hearing improvement product!
How does "Stuarts ear oil, the lubrication of sound" grab your attention eh?

True, that tends to be more of a gimmick though.

Those actually are not jingles by definition. What you are referring to, if I understand you correctly, is a slogan.

Jingles have music and sing something (in theory) catchy.

I think this is a big reason why more people aren't in the industry. There seems to be many misconceptions. It's never a good feeling sitting in front of a client and feeling like you aren't sure of what you are saying...or have someone correct you...which they will.

They want to buy from someone they feel is an expert. If someone corrects you, you lose that trust. If that mistake isn't made in the first place, no worries.

I have even had people from some rather large agencies/stations treat what I do as "those little jingle things." It's fun to light them up with examples and blow everyone's mind. Not in a negative confrontational way. In a listen, "let's deal with some reality here" kind of way. Respect is earned REALLY fast from them AND more importantly, the client!

All simple little fixes to be sure smile

I thought that maybe was the wrong link the first time, and waited to comment.

I can certainly see why you like the jingle sessions. Tight singers to be sure. It's fascinating to see/hear!

I am sorry I didn't answer this sooner. The way I have things structured right now, I sell on a complete buy out to my clients. That means the jingles become their property. I can no longer take credit for them, nor claim them as mine in any way. I have reasons for this.

That being said, I could possibly point to some smaller ones I have done, but would have to dig. If there is interest, I can do that.

I should clarify something. The terms/definitions I gave earlier in the post are for the United States. I am not sure what they would be in other countries.

I forget the number of people we have from around the world on this forum. I LOVE IT!

So, keep my comments in check please wink
