Because I Said So

JonD and I did this song in a few hours. All of our tracks are one take. Note that I am finding the first take, even those with a couple of warts, sound and feel better than those re-recorded many times.

BiaB style = Smoothly - Smooth Jazz - Pop Lat

BiaB generated the drums, bass and strings tracks which all were slightly modified to fit the song. The guitar and piano parts were deleted.

JonD is playing the Vibes and the trombone via his keyboard controller. I added the Trombone vibrato via my wind controller and I wrote in the slide and slur parts.

I am playing the flute part via my MIDI guitar controller.

Let us know what you think.

Hi Mario,

You and Jon have certainly produced the goods again. This is one of the prettiest and most poignant melodies that I've heard in some time. It's a delight to listen to.

Unless my ears are playing tricks on me, it sounds like those strategically placed chords are from the augmented family. It's such a rare sound these days and, when it's used as skilfully as you've used it, the augmented 5th really adds depth and dimension to a musical backing. The last time I remember hearing this chord in a popular piece of music was when Whitney sang "The Greatest Love Of All".

Thanks to you and Jon for taking me on a very pleasant musical journey.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. The instrumentals were excellent. MIDI makes so many things possible!

Nice chord progression.

I like the parts that were played live. Especially the flute.

Nice work

Really nice Mario. Pleasant, enjoyable, very melodic.

The instruments choices worked well, and your work on the slur's gave amazing realism. The vibes were a little too hidden maybe?

Thanks for sharing

Yes, ethereal is the word. I understand your feelings about one take. So many
of Janice's vocals are one take. She feels that something slips away after
several takes.

I don't know diddly about how y'all do this...but we both know that it sounds
fantastic. Just all kinds of nature images running through my ole head.

Thanks!

Mario, Good to see you back. I hope things calm down a bit for you. I just can't wrap my mind around how you make that flute so real from a guitar. I understand how it works , but the musicality of it is on a different level. You two have been laying down some great tracks. Keep them coming, we've got a long way to go. Tom

A great listen, Mario!

I really like the snap to the bass. The flute is especially nice...

So... Who is the JonD guy? and why is he not a BIAB user?

huh?

This is really nice. Great instrumentation. I have been using midi a bit more lately along with the super midi instruments and also working through a music book, 'Reading Music for the Guitar' in an attempt to learn to read/write music notation to input midi. Your work is inspiration for what midi can do though I never overlook that such proficiency will remain beyond my capabilities...

Glad you are back submitting on the forum again.

Nice chord sequence, very relaxing listen.
I find 1st takes are usually the best for instrumentals and a good basis for my vocals, at least.

A CD of your, and JonD, songs would make an excellent relaxation tape.

Good to hear you're back

take care

Hey Mario.
Great write.
The intro reminded me of Raining in my heart sung by Buddy Holley.
Very nice.
Hope you and your family are doing well.

SoundCloud is not cooperating this morning, Mario. I'll stop by again for a listen.

Okay, got it now. Very sweet. Especially like what I guess I'd call that bridge section, at the 3:00 mark, and as it moves back to the chorus or main melody. It set the ending up really well.

One take. Nice!

Thanx all for listening and the extremely nice comments that I will pass on to JonD.

Noel, yes that is an augmented 5th, I have been known to use them a lot! One thing I do is to add the augmented 5th to a 7th chord, for instance three beats of G7, one beat of G+7 then to a C. Another is a major chord, + chord, 6th chord followed by a 7th chord, for example G, G+, G6, G7 then a C. This sounds great on a guitar!

Tommyad - yes things are starting to calm down. Just 6.5 weeks of driving my wife to the hospital for radiation treatments. The flute is an instrument that I really like. Herbie Mann's "Memphis Underground" is one of my favorites. All I try to do is to emulate what I hear from my albums.

Floyd - JonD is an old friend. We lost track of each other for about 50 years; we were in competing bands back in the early 60's! We ran into each other a couple of years ago and decided to join forces and make some music; it was tough for him at the start because of many years of just playing solo in his room. He has come a long way in a very short time. He knew nothing about making music on a computer until he came over. He bought my old music computer with an old DAW on it but he is talking about getting a new computer and BiaB.

Charlie - once you get into MIDI things start to gel and in no time you will be doing what I am doing. Anytime you need help please feel free to contact me.

Rob -thanx. We are getting there one day at a time.

Mario,

Really nice to see you back. I see you have been through some real trying times lately. My prayers are with you and your wife.

I really enjoyed this one. You have really come a long ways with your midi controller! As has already been pointed out, the flute sounds so real! Great job on this one.

Steve
