It's great to be back out of the asylum! During my incarceration, my head lit up with wildly ambitious fantasies, twisted hallucinations, deranged sounds and a relentless feeling of being pursued by something too hideous for words.

I can't express in words what's been in my head (that's where the music comes in), but I can tell you this: What you will hear consists of 14 measures in 7/4 time followed by one measure in 2/2. Real Drummer Terry Clarke absolutely steals the show. Right at the start, a SoundCloud commentator calls his performance "sick!" YES! I can identify with that!

I plead guilty to all the rest (12 string guitar, electric keys, bass).

Wow, you really came back in style. Amazing work.

Your Soundcloud listing I think is a record for the most posts I've seen. Well deserved. Thanks for posting.

Dean,

AWESOME, as usual.
Man you can play laugh

I genuinely, sadly, have been in an asylum, and yes that rhythm perfectly depicts how one feels, until the drugs kick in, that is. I have to add that after intense investigation I have found that the diagnosis was intentionally false for reasons I still don't know, but the fight continues!

One question. How on earth do you record that? You play most of the instruments, with such a complicated time signature so where on earth do you start??????

excellent

Hi, Dean !

This is almost insanely
good ! It must be one of
your absolutely best if not
the best !!!!
There must be improvisations
in this, I even heard something
reminding me of "Caravan" !!!

Hey, ol´bud, I am probably
not very active on the site
anymore, but eventually I´ll
try and remind my old friends
of my existence !!!

Cheers

Dean, this is absolutely fantastic!

I love odd time signature music. Take that and couple it with your outstanding guitar chops and you have a super winner!

This is a keeper for sure. It went into my keep folder so fast that it left skid marks on my monitor!

Sensational arrangement and mix Dean. A bit of off-the-planet stuff happening in there.

I really enjoyed it. Absolutely great guitar work! Wow would be an understatement.

Through lots of hard work and your added genius, you've taken the capabilities of the program to new heights. Given it a new dimension yet again.

Great to have you back !!!

Charlie,

It's so great to get such a warm welcome back - I think I met your brother on SoundCloud. I'm really glad you liked this tune. I'll have more to say about it's construction, below.

Thank you for the kind words.

Greg,

I am just knocked out by your comments. Woweee, man! Keep in mind I've been thinking about this tune for decades and here is the original:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8zBGnikch8

This was the one and only album on which Pat Martino played electric 12 string. When I heard that sound, I said to myself, "I gotta get one o' them damn things," and I've played the instrument ever since. After Pat released this, a country western singer had a hit called Desperado, so to avoid confusion I tried to come up with a new name. I've never heard the C/W Desperado, but Forum members probably have. I wanted to steer clear of any confusion.

Greg, your generous comments just blow me away and I thank you.

Alyn,

I read with regret your account of the episode. Asylum is a funny word. On the one hand, it means an inviolable place of shelter, refuge and protection (say, for debtors and thieves). That's why refugees seek it in other countries. On the other hand, the connotations are so bad that in this country - I think it was in the 80's - all the asylums were emptied and the residents booted onto the streets to fend for themselves. Many died as a result of blundering into the dangers of the "real" world. My matter of fact, lighthearted introduction was a solid, proximate metaphor for the real reason behind my absence.

Now, on the construction of Psycho, in BIAB under bar settings, the default number of beats to a measure is listed as zero. This can be changed to any integer value not greater than 4. So, one measure of 4 followed by one measure of 3 beats gives the seven beats, understood to be a single measure. These get copied and pasted up to the point where a measure of 2/2 happens. Use the bar settings to change the beat value to 2. The drum track consisted almost entirely of fills. I never expected it to work as well as it did, but it did seem to work.

And thank you for the generous comments.

Dean

Dani ol' pal,

Well, they said it couldn't be done! But, nevertheless, here you are. Improvisation? Except for a brief snippet of melody, the whole thing is improvised. One thing that really obsessed me during my absence was a project of looking at the guitar from scratch, in a new way. You may hear some of the results in Psycho. Another thing happened as a result: I call it Guitar Player's Elbow. In Tennis Elbow, the outer point becomes inflamed and painful. With Golfer's Elbow it's the inner point closest to your body. I had to invent Guitar Player's Elbow to cover the case where both points are afflicted. Two cortisone shots. One of them worked. It's no fun gettin' old, sonny.

Another thing: I worked on a tune for 12 hours or more only to have RealBand lock up. When I tried to re-open the file, it wouldn't. I went nuts. Except for RealDrums I don't touch the program any more. I've lost so many man-days of work with that RealBand - Peter Gannon are you listenin'? Am I the only one this happens to?

Anyway, Dani, it's great to have you back even if only occasionally. My own powers of originality also aren't up to the task of being a regular contributor. Thanks for that extravagant praise my friend.

Mario my friend,

You are generous beyond belief. This is not your typical guitar player's tune and, as I've mentioned, along with other balls-and-chains around my ankles, I've been agonizing over the instrument, looking for a completely different way of approaching the fretboard. Been playing around with the circle of fifths (clockwise, fourths counterclockwise), trying to find a "distance metric" between the scales, figuring that not-so-distant scales are the avenue to getting new, "outside" ideas. Been working the chops to death, so I hope some of these new things came across in the performance.

In any case, your kind remarks make my day.

Janicde and Bud, my friends,

Thank you for the wonderful compliment. I admire your ability to understand and perform in different genres. Usually, I am pretty self-effacing when it comes to music - I usually tell people that what I do ain't no "rocket science music." This time though, I will confess that Psycho really is rocket science music - music for musicians. You guys are that if you're anything and the fact that you dig this tune is just so gratifying. Thank you.

Ha Josie! When I listen to this thing, I do, in fact, have moving images in my head. Headlong flight, pursuit, something unearthly.

I must also tell you that I went ahead and did Blame It on my Youth myself. I got the impression that you had headed out for the wider world and larger venues, and probably forgot all about it. I think I'll send you the track on SoundCloud for your review. If you think I ought to post it on the Forum I will; if not, not.

And thanks for the favorable remarks.
