Hi folks,
I just ordered an SSD (Samsung 850-evo) from amazon, Heard good reports about SSD's from Matt and others on here as well as other forums.
Probably will just let it sit in a spare dvd bay as I don't have any hard drive bays available. I understand that it doesn't generate much head so sitting on a metal part shouldn't really be a problem.
I understand that I have to disable windows defrag and maybe enable a few things in windows as well.
Any advice appreciated on setting it up, I know best way is to do a clean install of windows 7 32 bit but I have so much stuff would take me weeks and a total headache so will try either a clone from present HDD or acronis image.
Thanks for any advice. Musiclover

If you are putting the entire system onto the SSD, I hope the SSD is as big or bigger (In GB) than your original hard drive. Otherwise it will mean stopping a partition from being copied over. I would certainly go for making a clone from your original drive onto the new SSD drive, as firstly making a current image onto an external drive, then copying the image onto the new SSD is going to take twice the time. Once you have the system cloned or otherwise copied onto the SSD you will be amazed at the speed of boot up time, the time required for applications to open and be ready to use and more. I went down that road nearly twelve months since and the speed improvement is well worth the cost of the drive, though mine is a 512GB drive from Crucial. I have just recently within the last few days bought another one to use as the backup clone, rather than relying on the older mechanical hard drives. Incidentally, you are correct, you should disable the Windows automatic defragmenter. Defragmenting isn't really necessary and over a long period of time a continuously running auto defrag can cause premature failure. Nothing else needs any tweeks in Windows 7 that I am aware of

I have one of these as a system drive, a good 10% to 20% improvement. Totally reliable for five or so years. I wonder what size win 10 is, which is out tomorrow?
If you use it as a system drive you get max benefit, but at 250 gig I had to place BB samples elsewhere. I notice they don't perform so well when full, lots of messaging..

Just FYI for those looking at this thread/topic:
Newegg has a 1 day (until midnight 27th) on a 1TB Samsung SDD for $379 with another 10% of with promo code EMCATNV22 and it has free shipping - so ~ $341.
almost tempting (not quite at the price point I'm looking for yet and 1TB boot is MINIMUM for me)
That SSD is still almost ~3 times more expensive than a 2TB WD Black 7200 (when WD Blacks go on sale - and they go on sale about 3 times a year)

I haven't noticed a huge increase in speed when shutting down or restarting my computer, but since switching to SSD there's a world of speed difference when running my OS and recording programs, especially in the studio where my computer is dedicated to music only.
By the way, you may want to have a look at Macrium Reflect for cloning. I have used it several times. It's a breeze to use and it's 'FREE'. Just a thought!

Thanks for replies. Well after reading here I had a rethink and cancelled the 250gb SSD reordered a 500gb one cost £133 about $210 from amazon.

Just an update on this. The SSD is brilliant cuts down computer startup time to half at least, used to take over two minutes before hard drive would settle down loading startup programs now less than a minute. Would really recommend it to anyone who hasn't already got one. I just installed the 500gb SSD partitioned the hard drive in windows disk management. Did my acronis image install, checked the Trim was enabled, checked that partition were aligned using mini tool partition wizard (free and good disk manager program will partition rebuild MBR and other things) http://www.partitionwizard.com/Disabled defrag and indexing and was good to go. Couple of other things I could have done like disable superfetch but I read that they are not really important. Hope the day comes soon when the old HDD are obsolete. I feel that the SSD has given the computer a new lease of life, applications load quicker as well. Thanks to Matt and others on here for making me aware of SSD's in the first place though I waited a while for prices to come down. Musiclover

Good to hear you are now set up and like me happy with the results. Another thing you will find is that antivirus and malware scans run a lot quicker too.

Hi folks,

I've been running one in my studio computer for a while and have never had any problems. The only problem I had was, my computer was ATA, but when the 850-evo came in it was SATA. Not a big problem, easy to solve but it bears knowing ahead of time. You're gonna love it. Kajun Jeaux
