Obviously we didn't do it because of the cost. Our auto industry didn't want to retool because of the cost (to make smaller fuel efficient cars) and now you can see what shape those companies are in. I agree with Mac to a point. His example is some prefer a mac and some a pc. However it's more than just personal preference to me. Metric is just so much easier to deal with mathematically. As to tools, we all have to have both types and even more so now that so much of our stuff comes from China. There is no doubt that it could cost tons of $$ to convert but will we ever? It's no problem for me to convert some simple stuff in my head such as 10K = 6.2mi. 1m = 39+", etc. In my shop, I have as many metric rulers, tapes, calipers as the"inch" ones. Well, one thing is for sure--were not going to solve this problem on a PG Music forum. Seems that there's a song that sort of relates here=== "Instanbul Not Constantinople" (if I got the title right).

Due to the proliferation of Inch Pattern, though, most US Engineers also have to deal with conversions from one to the other, for example, the metric printed circuit board fitted into the inch pattern case, things like that. We also are well versed in the problem of "metric creep" where the simple mathematical conversion from inch to metric or vice verse will always leave things a little bit "off". ---mac
one example that comes to mind...a 1/4 inch phone plug/jack IS NOT 6.3 mm and makes for a sloppy fit. have they ever gotten that 'standardis(z)ed, mac?
BTW, 102f here today. 108f with heat index. we have central a/c and a big fan but its still too hot for a bloke born in northern minnesota in a record blizzard.

Just after the metric system was introduced here, someone put out notice that we were converting to metric time. There would be 100 seconds in a minute, 100 minutes in an hour, 10 hours in a day, 10 days in a week, and 100 weeks in a years. It was very funny, but a lot of people thought it was serious.
I must admit that I DON'T miss a lot of the imperial measurements such as chains, rods, perches, fathoms, leagues etc.
Cheers, Keith
