I noticed this morning that FLASH doesn't work anymore in Firefox. Then stories started showing up on facebook and news feeds. Here's one:

http://gizmodo.com/turn-off-flash-to-avoid-malvertising-attacks-1640832181

Apparently Firefox has disable Flash to protect its users. The above article mentions Cryptowall... that's one baaaaad infection.. maybe the MRSA of the computer world.

This will have an impact on YouTube, which is Flash-based. I'm wondering what other well-known sites are Flash based. Anybody know if StreetJelly is Flash based? (update: it is)

Anyway, heads up. If you aren't using Foxfire, you may want to disable flash. Apparently you don't even have to click on the ads in order to get infected. If Flash is enabled when such an ad is present, then you get whatever it's pushing.

Pat,

Appreciate your posting regarding the topic of "My Moment".

Due to amount of time on the net, needed better protection.
Or maybe just touch-feely protections..

I recently purchased Pro version of Avira.
Good, bad, or whatever do feel better.

Try to avoid net dark alleys, but its everywhere we go.

Howdy Pat,

Safari has an option to load flash only on demand. When you hit a site where it is needed it will not load until you tell Safari that you trust the site or the embedded video that is attempting to play. That sounds like a better option than just shutting off 25% of all websites to users. FWIW, although the CNN article stated 11% other sources cite 23-25% Who knows. I thought Youtube had gone HTML 5 this year.

I'm sure everyone has their fav protection, but, I use Spyhunter 4 with great success. One nightly clean-up and anything that may have slipped through will be cleaned. There is a short video demo on the link below:

Thanks for posting this Pat...I had no idea all of this was going on. Wonder what impact it would have if I just remove Flash altogether from my machine since it seems that most sites have gone HTML?

When I look at my browser (IE 11) I see an add-on called Shockwave Flash Object...is this the one they are talking about?

Yes Jeff, that is the flashplayer for Internet Explorer. As stated already, Youtube and many other sites are now using the HTML5 player and most modern and up to date browsers work with it.

As an aside, Adobe are doing a lot of work to try to fully secure flash player and updates to more secure versions are available, just check on the Adobe flashplayer site.

Shockwave flash player was the older name, Adobe just shortened it by removing the shockwave bit.

where would I find an HTML5 player? After reading Bud's comment that Youtube has switched to HTML5, I spent the evening trying to get ANYTHING to play (everything got blocked by Firefox) so, apparently I don't have an HTML5 player installed?? (I would have thought that was baked into the browser, and I have the latest Firefox)

here: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/html5-media-player/

This is the German site, but I'm sure there is an English site also. But any time I enter another language code here /de/ the change is ignored.

Why are you so attached to Firefox? Switch to Chrome. I have had not one issue playing anything and no attacks. You will have a learning curve of about 45 seconds to learn Chrome if you have never used it before. The integration with maps, gmail, calendar, etc..... is amazing.

Firefox has many important tools built in. Especially important to me is the Restore Session function, with which I am able to recover tabs without having to try to recall and open them individually. Last time I tried Chrome—which was years ago—I was totally unimpressed with the amount of control offered under Settings. I'm also not a big fan of Google, but that's just me.

Eddie I know you're very good with this stuff. Things move very fast in this space so for now what are your reasons knowing it will probably all change by tonight...

This site will tell you if you have html5 installed and give you sites to DL it.

I hope this helps.

I received a warning this morning to the affect that Firefox was at risk of security breach by running Flash Player so, since I've been noticing system sluggishness, I downloaded the current version of MalwareBytes and ran a complete system scan. It was eyeopening. 1025 errors detected!

A commonality was: corrupted install.exe files. I've narrowed it down to something in FF. When I tried to reinstall MalwareBytes, FF blocked it from being installed. A visit to Majorgeeks.com immediately sorted it.

If you haven't run a system scan recently, I highly recommend doing so.

OK, just to update you on where I've been with all of this. Yesterday, after reading through the posts here, I deleted Flash in IE and Chrome using the Adobe Flash remover and procedures. At first everything seemed ok...videos still played. But this morning, after restarting my computer, all videos on CNBC, CNN, NBC News and Youtube have stopped working whether it be in IE or Chrome. Looks like it's back to Flash for me. Hate having a vulnerability but so much is vid-based these days.
