Hi Music lover, if your right that's good, but is this just your take on things?
If the refreshed licence is somehow stamped "Win 10 only" then this might not work
A lot rides on this, but I get the feeling your right and I am wrong.

Well I am not 100% sure as to what might happen Z, even though I am virtually certain that one can go back to the old windows 7 or 8 anytime, who knows Microsoft could mess up and roll back could be seen as non-genuine software. If it can go wrong sometimes it will. To be honest I want to be able to dual boot with windows 10 and windows 7 but I wont be rushing to upgrade as all my software works on 7. I do have windows 8.1 on my computer as well so might try upgrading that one first. Simple answer to avoid any problems is to go and buy a license for Windows 10 as a separate thing, and don't upgrade your present Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Providing you own a license, then your are set.

I currently have a dual boot set up for Windows 7 and Windows 8. I'm assuming that if I update the Windows 8 drive to Windows 10 that it would not affect the current dual boot setup and leave the Windows 7 installation in place?

I am not certain at tall that it could turn out this way, in fact from past experience I would probably think that it might only leave an option to boot into windows 10 as 10 will overwrite the MBR. Your windows 7 will still be there in that partition but you won't be able to boot into it more than likely. In a case like this I use EasyBCD to rewrite the boot configuration and fix the MBR to boot into windows 7. Maybe it will turn out as you say but I would be prepared for the above as well. Musiclover

You are correct I should have been more clear when I jumped in here and said I was going to be triple booting. I won't be doing that with the free upgrade to Windows 10.
UPGRADING to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8 is no different then when folks bought shiny new computers or laptops "back when" and were offered free upgrades from Windows XP to Windows Vista, Vista to Windows 7, or from Windows 7 to Windows 8 by Dell or other manufacturers. Actually it was offered by Microsoft and facilitated by the PC sellers.
This upcoming (tomorrow) Windows 10 for free is an UPGRADE not a NEW license - unless, and this is unlikely, MS offers free new licenses.
Also concur with the OEM versions of the OS's - they are tied to the motherboard. I only use OEM versions to build my PCs I can change everything except the motherboard and a have.

"Lastly, the upgrade license grants you rights to run Windows 10 in addition to the existing rights to run Windows 7.
The caveat is that you can only legally. per the agreement, run one OS on the one machine at a time. If you want to run the other OS, you must remove the upgraded OS from the machine, then install the previous OS"

... and last night ago I received an email from Paragon, I have at least one of their products registered, that offers me a free package to clone Win7 for future use in case hardware or software don't work with Win10. I'm still waiting until the dust settles.
I suspect Win10 will eventually be just fine, but there will probably be some time before they get all the bugs out and the hardware/software people get the drivers updated.
I will eventually do the upgrade, which is weird for me, as I usually just wait until I need a new computer. However, from what I've been reading, W10 is going to be more secure and have some nice features.
Plus if it is truly going to be 'the last Windows OS' I may as well adopt it.

Remember the difference between update and upgrade. An OS upgrade, since back like when 98 went to XP, usually requires a format and clean load. And the less aware that don't have a storage drive lose the last photo of their dog and them with their late mother in the process.
Has Micro$oft yet told us what the value add is that make Windows 10 mo' betta?
Not broke = don't fix.
I have Windows 7 SP1 on 5 computers and have no issues at all. Homegroup is working fine and I stream from one to the other or to the Chromecast on my TV just fine. 1 old soldier continues to march on XP, as I just don't want to take the time to move stuff and format the C: drive just to upgrade to Windows "anything but XP" just to say I am running "anything but XP". I don't care that Micro$oft has disowned XP. I don't need them to patch or update anything on a computer that is off the network 99% of the time. The only time I enable the wireless NIC is when I need to move a file in house or mail one out.

I suspect that since Windows 10 shares a lot of the same architecture already found in Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, that the in-place "upgrade" is going to be more like doing a service pack update, rather than requiring a complete clean installation (which of course you can do, as well), but in theory, all your apps should still work as before. It used to be that in-place upgrades only kept Microsoft apps working, but all the others needed re-installing. Supposedly that's not the case this time around.
We'll see...

I was a "sort of beta" tester - I installed win 10 Tech Preview, played with it, and since some things were still "hincky" and I couldn't load all my HW drivers and some older SW (yet) without glitches (yes reported back to MS) _ I quit playing with it (it was tri-booted with WIN 7 and XP) - I wiped that HDD yesterday - to get ready for commercial OEM version of Win(d)X Pro - but I will wait at least 6 months or more. However, this is a heads up for all you Win 7 and Win 8 HOME users doing the FREE upgrade - there is one IMPORTANT difference between Win 10 HOME and Win 10 PRO - remember if you have Win 7 or 8 Home - you only get the free Win 10 Home. If you want Win 10 Pro you need to spend a few dollars/euros/DM's/Yen whatever. Win 10 HOME users will have no control over MS pushed updates! Win 10 Pro users have more control over what and when. If Win 10 wipes (formats) your drive, how can it revert to the previous OS? Does it store an image of the old drive somewhere? If that's the case, it would eat up so much drive space I can't imagine how 10 can fit.
More info needed.

Well the Samsung SSD I got has a five year warranty, if it does go bad on me within that period and I get a free replacement I'll be happy.
Expending the finite number of write cycles is not "going bad". That is just working it to expiration. I have doubts they would replace it under warranty if they do analysis and and see that it was written to expiration rather than actually failing. I must have changed out 2 dozen SSDs or people who through heavy use ran through their write cycles. Now, I have been out of this for a long time. (2 years.) Has that 50,000 write cycle limit been increased?

From what I understand (and this is only me trying to put things in layman's terms).
If you simply upgrade the current system to W10, you have 30 days until the OS starts writing over files that make it possible to revert back. At this point you are stuck with W10 without doing a new install/repair.
If you make a clone, and then upgrade the original, you will likely have more than 30 days to revert back to the original drive.
If you try to load your older clone after 30 days, you'll likely have to re-authenticate it. This will be a pain but doable. By coincidence, 30 days is how long you can run an nu-authenticated OS on Windows currently.
If you decide to revert back to W7, you'd have to make a phone call to re-authenticate the license for W7.
Why do I think this?
Scenario1: you upgrade to W10, your system has an issue and totally crashes, and your OEM restore disk is a W7 restore/repair. Do you think they will abandon supporting these? They may make it a bit of a pain, but I don't think they would abandon re-authenticating a W7 OEM restore ..
Just my opinion, based on previous experience.
They don't want the license used on more than one machine. Even if the machine does have a different MB, it can be authenticated, but only for one machine.
Scenario2: Dual-boot; I do not know if they will allow 2 OS to share a license on the same machine. I'm sure they'd frown on it, but I can't answer.
History says this was possible, but whether W10 changes that will be interesting.

I was a "sort of beta" tester Then you are the guy to ask. What is the value add here? Is Win 10 going to do anything for me at a bits and bytes level that 7 doesn't? Is it just a lot of frilly front end artwork and "prettyfying" Win 7 or 8? I am looking for any article at all from that evil corporation as to what Win 10 does for us. Win 7 is plenty stable, so that is not an issue for me. Win 7 runs every bot of software I have thrown at it so the value add isn't there. Was it just time for that greedy, evil, soulless corporation to reach into the consumer's pockets again so the media propaganda machine came up with an ad campaign to convince the lemmings that their life will end without Win 10. The reason I sound bitter is that I anticipate that in 2017 we will have to get Win 11, then Win 12, then Win 14 (They'll skip 13. Does it make anybody feel good about flying knowing airlines are superstitious and skip row 13?), all designed to take more money from us. So, again I ask, what is the value add for Win 10. What does it do better than 7 or 8 to justify releasing it? Will this be like the travesty that was Millenium Edition where they wanted to release 2000 but it was not ready so they just put front end frills on 98 and released it as the next great thing? All so Bill Gates can have a house with parking for 20 cars....?

If Win 10 wipes (formats) your drive, how can it revert to the previous OS? . It doesn't format the drive. The Windows 10 update is not a clean install. Like every other Windows upgrade, the installation leaves a folder called windows.old that is accessed if you make the decision to rollback to the old OS.
