http://www.howtogeek.com/223139/how-to-create-an-image-of-your-pc-before-upgrading-to-windows-10/

the lino is about how to image your drive before Win 10 arrives. It's well written.

Maybe this helps some..

Well installed windows 10 last night, upgraded my windows 8 pro to windows 10 pro.

Everything went well until I reached the sign in welcome screen on 10, then the message your pc has a problem Kmode_exception_not_handled and computer wants to restart to be met with same problem, next restart

Got in on safe mode, I think I may well have a driver problem with my ATI radeon hd 4600 card, but not sure.

To be honest I don't have the time or the patience to troubleshoot this, probably will take a lot of hours and extra expense buying a new card if its that.

As windows 7 and 8 are working fine I guess its good bye 10 for the moment.

This is interesting. If you download Win10 from this link, then you get an option to create an installation disk, and you DON'T have to Install Win 10 if you don't want to

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You will need a clean 4 gig usb stick or a few DVDS to create the disk. If you hit the switch on the webpage, what happens is you download an exe file that give's you both options, on the first screen

I am still nervous, but basically positive about this.

I dont really know what drivers to check. Do you need to check them all?

If you right click on the pesky little win 10 icon on the bottom right of desktop, then you can find a compatibility checker by hitting the 'hamburger' menu icon (three blue lateral lines). But is it trustworthy, muso friendly?

Welcome to the 21st Century. You are right about there not being a Windows 13, but not because of superstition. There won't be a Windows 13 because there won't be a Windows 11 or 12. Microsoft announced that Windows 10 is the end of the line.

Microsoft is changing its whole business model from one of selling you newer versions of its software to providing you with a service. Microsoft will be continually rewriting and improving Windows from now on without rolling out new versions.

My understanding from what I've read on numerous sites is that while yes, you can install Windows 10 from the downloaded ISO file, if you want the free upgrade, you must first do the in place upgrade (not a clean install). Once you have done that and logged in and registered with Microsoft's registration server, then you can do a clean install, because now Microsoft knows the signature of your computer and has assigned a Windows 10 license to it.

If you try to do a clean install with the downloaded ISO, then it's going to ask you for a Windows 10 license key (which you won't have, because you didn't buy it).

I've seen this information on numerous sites, but it could be wrong. I'm sure some folks will try it and we'll hear their reports back.

For me, I left both my computers doing a system drive image this morning to be able to revert back quickly if I need to, so I should be able to try to upgrade either tonight or tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

By the way, the files it downloads in the background (if you clicked on the "reserve my copy" icon) will take up 6 GB of C: drive disk space.

Free is never free.

There ain't no free lunch...ect ect

And windows is not the only OS that will run BIAB or any other software I need to run.

Yes I run Windows 7 Ultimate and may go to 10 at some point but no one, not even Microsoft has a gun to my head to force me to use their products, and if Microsoft gets completely out of hand cost wise in the future with "renting it" by the month there are other options.

They can keep their free upgrade crap and if and when I want to go to Win 10 I will buy it just like I did Win 7.

I am not doing beta testing for anyone for three or four hundred dollars, may as well go work at the local beer joint for that kind of money...lol

The stuff we put up with from big business and big government is is out of control. Next thing you know there will be a federal BIAB posting tax...lol

Cheers,

Billy

Can't help you just info:

I have a HD 6970 and it was fine in the Win 10 Tech Preview I had installed.

but a just a few days before going "live" MS pushed a patch (update) that really screwed up NVida cards/drivers and there was a panic patch to correct

so...

Good Luck

What can I say. I had a long winded treatise on this (against the need to jump right now but) but bottom line is: Win 10 is inevitable so at some point everyone will just move to it, or be forced to because new apps may only run in Win 10 environment.

Similar to when Cakewalk's first Sonar would ONLY run in Win XP that eventually forced me (two+ years later) from Win 98 to Win XP. Took me longer than that to go from XP to 7 (Skipping vista).

I installed Win 10 Tech Preview for a non-music related heads-up on compatibility with older non-music HW (SCSI, RS-232, and IEEE 1394) and some propriety SW.

I would say simply "stay tuned" since it seems some here (and at other forums) have already started the move to Win 10 so they will be the real source of pluses and minuses.

I will be waiting for a while before diving in to Win 10 for personal use and maybe even longer for consultant (non-music) use.

Right. All this angst is standard procedure on the first day of a new OS release. There are good people here who I trust and I'll wait for their guinea pig reports. Even though I'm planning on upgrading my machine and getting Win 10 I'm certainly not doing it this weekend.

And, there's no doubt in my mind that this will all work out. The early reports I've read concerning digital audio sound pretty good.

After 8 came out Cakewalk did a bunch of testing with Sonar around 3-4 years ago and said it was killer for DAW work. Faster and better than 7. A lot of us with 7 didn't upgrade to 8 because it was well, 8. And 10 seems to be that much better than 8. Sounds like the real deal to me but we'll see.

SO I read another post on this forum, where Ryzard is stating that Cubase is having serious issues, and not just one issue. Quicktime too. Steinberg are advising Not to upgrade at present.

Funny, my machine passed all applications for compatibility tests, using the win ten compatibility checker.

Or maybe not so funny....

Seems Microsoft want access to your emails and personal data

"“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to […] protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.”

I said NO to all those items. Just be sure to select "customize", versus "quick" setup.

So I upgraded last night. I could see that my computer had already downloaded the upgraded (based on the hidden $WINDOWS.~BT". However, I had also downloaded the ISO file, which I burned to a DVD and used it instead. There were a few interesting glitches, but in the end it seemed to work.

I'll go into details later, but it looks like I have my laptop upgraded now and the basically seems to work. My computer says Windows is activated and I never had to log into Microsoft to do it (I know this, because I logged in using a local account). Default MIDI seemed to be a problem, but I'll take a look at that later. All the apps seem to be there as they were under Windows 7; now to launch them and see that they still work.

I'll post back later.

You lost me here. Windows has MIDI? As in "eliminates your interface unit"? Didn't Windows always have default midi with a generic vanilla synthesizer to play .mid files? (They always sounded like just beeps and boops, but it played them.)

I think he means setting your default midi device. As for beeps and bloops, hasn't there always been the wavetable synth that PG converted into the Coyote wavetable? It's a full GM instrument set, not just sound effects.

I suspect that with MS is just changing with the times. I don't know how long W10 will be free, but from what I read most often is that, like Google/Android they figured they can make more money from commissions on the app store and selling your info to advertisers than they can with constant upgrades.

I guess they figure that Linux made a dent, Google/Android is doing well, and it's just a matter of time when the OS isn't the killer app anymore. So by keeping you in the MS family by giving away W10, they can sell you things in the Windows store, sell your personal data like Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. already do, and make the profit under the table instead of above board.

Now that is all conjecture, and there are some articles I've read that disagree, but this is what I read most often.

Remember, if it's free, you aren't the customer, you are the product.

I could be wrong, but I suspect they will keep Windows at least subscription-free. That doesn't mean you won't have to buy your initial license in the future for your computer. But since the O/S is necessary to use the computer in the first place, people will not be happy to find their computer won't work at all unless they pay a subscription. Of course, the free offer is just for one year (but may be extended), and then after that, folks will just have to pay for a copy if they want to upgrade. Of course, if you buy a new computer, it will just come with it.

They will make their money by selling the licenses to system builders, and support services to business and government accounts, as well as the app store, cloud storage, etc. And I imagine (especially for businesses and government accounts), they make a bunch of money selling Microsoft Office products.

New lady is already in the rear view. Just not a great match in the long haul. That pic was taken on the way out back about February.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
