So, I upgraded to Windows 10 on my laptop. I used the downloaded ISO file and created a DVD. I knew to get the free upgrade, you had to do an in place upgrade first. Then, supposedly, after you do that, you can do a clean install if you want to.

I started the upgrade by running SETUP on the DVD. It started the process, and then ran a good while analyzing my system and figuring out what to do. I ultimately went to bed. When I woke up, it was at a screen asking for my product ID. Since I didn't have a Windows 10 product ID (your v7 or 8.0/8.1 is not your Windows 10 ID), I clicked skip (which I had read you could do). It then said, I needed to remove my media and reboot. I removed the media and clicked OK, and it just ended back up asking for my product ID again, but told me there was no media.

There was no button or selection to reboot, so I just held down the on/off button and shut the system down. I brought it back up (without the DVD in the drive), and the upgrade continued. I got to a screen then that said something like "Upgrade this PC". I said yes, and then went off and did other things. Came back about an hour later and I had Windows 10 on my desktop.

I checked and it said it was activated (although it never asked me to log into my Microsoft account and the account I logged in with on the computer was local account).

So far everything I've tried seems to work except if you select MIDI mapper. That is no longer available. You have to select the Microsoft GS Wavetable explicitly if you want it.

Otherwise, all my FastTrack Pro seems to work well, and I'm assuming it kept my Win7 drivers from the upgrade. My fingerprint reader works and so far my apps all seem to launch okay.

I did have some issues with my Steinberg USB key, but I just ran the newer eLicenser software and it seems to be okay now.

Windows 10 has the new start menu, which combines the Windows 7 start menu and Windows 8 start screen, however, I still prefer the Windows 7, so I downloaded StarDock's Start10 utility, which brings back the Windows 7 start menu, but still gives you access to the Windows 10 start menu (I already had a license to use StarDock products, so it didn't cost me anything).

One thing I did notice is that it didn't keep all my file and application associations intact, and I've also had to set some applications to "run as administrator", which I didn't before.

Don't know if I'm completely sold on it yet, but I'll work with it for a few days, and as long as everything works, I'll upgrade my desktop too.

But so far so good (as best I can tell).

Thanks John for the first guinea pig report. Your world didn't end, how about that?

It sounds like this is simpler than what I posted earlier although it's interesting you had to fake out the system to get past the product ID thing. No need to get an SSD yet, just upgrade what I have now, then do a clean install which I want, then later I can clone that and transfer to an SSD?

Just installed Win 10 on my laptop. Played around with BIAB for the last hour and have not encountered any glitches yet. I did have to re-set the count-in. I use it silent with lead-in metronome. Had to re-generate and freeze a few songs that had slash chords. BIAB wasn't playing the right bass note. So far, so good. Forums and G-Mail seem to be working like they should. Modern Jazz Pianist is working fine. Will report any glitches if they come up. Ray

The good thing about the start menu in windows 7 is you can go into it, find what you want and send shortcut to desktop, I do that all the time.

Of course its possible to do that on other versions but I found windows 7 far better.

In my opinion no one should have to install a third party piece of software to make the start menu more manageable, seems like Microsoft hasn't learned that yet.

What I have found as regards biab, is that sampletank and amplitube need to be reauthorised again if even cloned to a different drive.

Seems they must take some id info from drive.

Good to know the fast track pro will work ok John.

As regards sampletank needing to be reactivated in my experience only happens should you move for example acronis image of a drive to a different drive, when I installed the SSD recently and used the acronis image from my old HDD it then needed to be reactivated as did amplitube.

Yes, if you switch to an SSD, that will happen. I think IK-Multimedia uses disk signature, rather than processor signature to determine changes

If you go from physical drive to physical drive, you can apply the same disk signature, but my experience has also born out that going to an SSD does not preserve that.

As I understand it, Windows 10 uses processor signature, so you should be okay there if you change disks or other peripherals in the future.

Of course, IK gives you a bunch of authorizations anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. And if you don't use them up to quickly, they'll even reset them for you over time.

Thanks guys, sounds like this should be relatively easy. From what I'm reading here and other sources it seems to be going pretty well for everybody.

How about sharing your wifi password? Did you deselect that option of Wi-Fi Sense?

Thanks for the Wi Fi Sense tip. I never saw that all. One thing un-related to Wi Fi, I find I'm having to turn the number lock key on every time I open the laptop. Never had to do that before.

The NumLock key can be controlled by a Registry hack, which is likely why it changed with the OS upgrade, but you should also be able to set it in the BIOS.

Man, what a reminder this thread is of why I switched to Apple in 2011 after 30 years of MS. For me Apple turned "plug and pray" into "plug and play." Apple is assuredly not perfect but I really like their cloistered world where on mobile devices, laptops and desktops OS new versions/updates and app updates are seamless. I've gone through two new OS's and yet to experience a driver issue or any issue for that manner. No bombs away on installations, no cryptic messages and a very short turnaround time. I guess the software, firmware and hardware being under one company umbrella helps.

There is a whole bunch of data Microsoft starts to collect from your usage, storing, using it, and selling it.

A simple search with a search engine that also spies:
https://www.google.de/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=windows+10+shares+password
results in a lot of articles how to avoid Microsoft's data mining for the most part.

Every one of these posts that go on the anti Micro$oft rant somewhere includes "and they sell your data". I probably hate Micro$oft more than anybody you know, but someone needs to give me absolute proof that Micro$oft is selling anything. What data is it you say they are selling? I have no Micro$oft email accounts, I do not provide my correct address (not even city and state), and I use the OS only, not MSIE. What do you think they are gathering and selling, and what proof do you have? Note I asked for proof, not opinion or hearsay. Proof.

Anybody?

I just read 5 articles about this Wi-Fi Sense. Choose your words carefully as you discuss. It does not share your actual password. It shares an encrypted copy of it to allow people to access your network, and this is key, for internet access only.

So if your password is RealBandIsGreat, a user coming into range does not know your password is RealBandIsGreat. It only grabs access to the internet, and NOT to your clients on your network.

That being said, I think it is a heinous intrusion and another reason why I will hate Micro$oft forever. And it is not even the feature itself that gets the short hairs on my neck to stand up. It's the fact that they continue to shove things down our throat with the default set to ON. Ethical companies would include a text document that explains "If you want this on, this is how you do it." Unethical companies, like Micro$oft, don't even tell you it's there.

I REALLY hate Micro$oft and Bill Gates.

I think it is becoming Mac time here at Casa del Eastside.

We are lucky to have you here with your IT experience, Eddie.

With all possible affection, your avatar is scary! I much prefer the "gentle" you in the signature photo. Just a thought.

Hey, that cornet I bought from you inspired me to get a pro horn from Schilke, and I would never have done that without experiencing yours first. Your horn lives at my cabin for the times when I don't bring anything else with me. It's very handy. The thing is built more like a tank than any current horn, or any pro horn. I think I could use it to jack up my car if need be...

I know that, there are many statements about the encrypted access data. I dislike that I have to opt out. I dislike that somebody tells "everybody" else: "Feel free to use it." I pay for my bandwidth and the selfish me wants to use it exclusively.
Just like I don't put my car keys outside on the gate for everybody's use.

My LAN has a whitelist of allowed devices, identified by their MAC address. If I have not listed the notebook or smartphone of somebody else, sorry, no access except via the guest access port with some limited privileges.

That picture is my Sam Kinison look. OOOOOHHHHHH! OOOOOHHHHHHH!!!

Glad to know that the horn is getting use. I have started moving gear along so it gets used. 3 guitars have found new homes where they get played. They are not built to be museum pieces, right?

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
