Hi, My friend Pete from England ask me to do a backing track to this song. Is this just to complex to do for a new user like me? 3/4 time, tempo changes, rhythm changes, key of F# minor Even the simple chord changes are a puzzle for me. F# minor, F# minor major 7, A, B I think is what they played. BB can create F#min Maj7 but F#aug sounds more correct. This is a typical McCartney descending line, on the guitar in this case. I don't even know what style to look for. https://youtu.be/4A-5hyKaITQWhere to start?? Billy

Billy,
Try importing the original Beatle tune into the Audio Chord Wizard (ACW) for chords.
Check out Bob Norton's site, Norton Music. He may have created a midi style specific for the song.

It is also easier to write the chord chart in a major key and then transpose the song to the proper key prior to generating the style.
A quality midi track will also create a chord chart and there are many available on line. Doing it this way will do most of the work for you and BIAB will also provide a message if there are suitable RealTracks available to replace some of the midi instruments.

First, when you have an antique video like this it's entirely possible what you hear isn't the correct key sig. It easily could be a half step out so it could be F or G or even E. Notice the music doesn't match the video at all? Whatever that vid is it's not Taste of Honey. All that happened is the guy found an old video and added the track to it from a record. Record players are notorious for being out of key, sometimes way out. Same for cassette players.
Your friend wants you to create an EXACT cover of this or does he just want something close? It's just a waltz and if he plays guitar he can do that standard bottom note run down himself.

Hi Bob,
Yes Pete would like as close as I can get. I am going to have Bob...another Bob...Bob from down under..Brisbane Australia play a live drum track along with the video. Bob has a midi drum kit and a ton of software.
When I get that I think I will play the bass line live or see if I can get a good bass line out of BB.
The issue is tempo changes...not so easy for me to deal with yet in BB.
I will look in BB for a guitar part but the intro I will likely have to play myself. Perhaps there is a guitar arpeggio in BB I can use. The other guitar parts are in BB.
This is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together..lol...from three or four puzzle boxes.
Pete will do the vox and the animated video we have in mind, perhaps some guitar also.
This is getting to be to much like work...lol
Cheers,
Billy

This is definitely interesting to me because this is exactly why I got BIAB. I want to create backing tracks and as you have found you have to really manipulate to get the specific details of a song. I am not looking for note for note just reasonable. Real Band seems to work best for what I have tried so far. I am trying to establish a workflow that makes sense so I can whip these out in a reasonable amount of time then as we practice with them I can refine what doesn't work. I have tried importing midi versions of songs but that seems to be hit or miss with BIAB.

Imported midi files are usually better to work with in RealBand. The quality of the original midi file makes a difference as well. Midi tracks and audio can be automated to blend between the two types of file creating an audio exportable track that combines elements of both tracks. For instance, a specific riff can be created from a midi track and that particular bar of the riff replace a RealTrack bar in RB. PGMusic has a tutorial video showing how it is done. This is very useful when you are creating authentic backing covers. Audio scrapes can also be imported and blended into either midi files or audio files to achieve the same result.

When you import a midi song do you import the whole song and RB interprets from everything that is playing? Or should you isolate a particular track in the midi file for importing?

RB uses the 'Open' command for midi and 'import' for audio. If the midi file is type '0' RB prompts you to extract the channels to multiple tracks. If you choose NO, the midi file opens on a single stereo midi track.
Extracted to multiple tracks, each channel can be addressed individually for editing, mute, solo, panning and all other midi control features.
BIAB handles midi without you having the advanced editing features offered by RB.

I have a Hal Leonard Beatles songbook and A Taste of Honey is not listed as one of the 100 songs in it, sorry. Otherwise, I could have posted the chord changes for you.

Leaving to go fishing for a day or two. Yep, you just made discovery #1. If you're not already a total geek, that is 25 years old, (heh heh), this is all you do for hours, days, weeks, YEARS on end because you have no life, it's a TON of work to figure this all out and to finally create something good. You can try searching for the midi file online and I've found a few but we're not allowed to post links here due to copyright. Just Google the song and the word midi. The problem with that though is they're probably Herb Alperts version and not the Beatles but you might get lucky. The other problem is whatever you find for free could really suck but even then it could provide you a start that you can make corrections to. Bob

Actually, I think you could create a passable version of the tune using standard Band-in-a-Box styles. Say CT_WALZ.STY Country Waltz Style for the 3/4 and then a jazz shuffle for the 4/4 bit, which has a more or less standard walking bass. BTW, there are plenty of chords for this available: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/b/beatles/a_taste_of_honey_crd.htmThe Beatles vocal harmonies can be found in "The Complete Beatles Volume 1 - Probably the best source for creating a BB file. Nothing to do with making a file, but when I was looking at some of the videos of the tune on YouTube, I came across the Herb Alpert version, but with a strange band the creator of the video used for the Tijuana Brass. If that is not a very young Chris Barber Jazz Band, I did not come up in the Trad Boom of the 50/60s in the UK! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb6IMbXLnrA

Good reference by SR. This site appears here in the forum on occasion. It is actually a very good site. In this case for $3 bucks you get full audio backing of multiple parts. The quality has always been good.
