Bass, drums, and lead vocals should be centered 99% of the time. These 3 are the core of the song and need to be centered. Other things can be centered as well..... but those 3 are the foundation to the song and sound best when in the center.

Drums can be stereo but even when they are.... the main signal is centered so that they appear in both sides, balanced.

Most other instruments and vocals can be panned 20% or more...to taste.

Wide extreme panning should be used carefully and when you are doubling for thickening or specifically going for a special effect.


Do a mono test to be sure you don't have phase issues. (if you are placing the songs in film & tv libraries)
