The problem is solved! - and boy do I feel stupid. It was "pilot error" all the time.Thank you all for your help, and for spending some time and sharing your knowledge with me. I've actually learned a lot here, even though none of it fixed the problem. You are all great friends and your efforts are appreciated. So here we go. A long time ago, I was using an app that amplified my typing noises via the internal mic through the external amplified speakers. It was so long ago, that I don't even remember which program it was that did that. ThinkPad has a function key to turn off the internal mic. Fn+F4. When it does, a little orange LED lights up. The computer remembers this setting until I press Fn+F4 again. As you can see, this is a microphone icon, and it did the job of turning the internal mic off. Great ideas come in the 3 B's - the bed, the bath, and the bus. This one came in the bed. I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I took a little 45 minute "power nap" after lunch. I woke and wondered if this turned off just the mic or all the audio. The icon looks like a microphone, so I had no reason to suspect that it would turn anything but the mic off, but I've been grasping for straws for days before I even posted the first message here. So I tried it. IT WORKS!!! Even my old UA-1A interfaces work with the generic Windows drivers!!!!!!!!! The elation of finally fixing the problem has more than overwhelmed the embarrassment of feeling so stupid that I didn't try that first. Now I'll try installing the 32 bit M-Track drivers and see if it works with my new toy. Thanks again for your help! Insights, incites, and sighs of relief by Notes

Me too.
And really surprised that nobody teased me about how simple the solution was after batting my head against the wall for months.
Leilani and I had first jubilation, then relief, and then a great laugh at the situation.
And it's no wonder that all those well meaning people like yourself who tried so hard to help couldn't see the problem.

Good tip Bob, others can get caught too, so this is helpful, and sometimes looking for the unexpected (AKA thinking outside the square), is the best place to turn to.

We have all been there at some time or other. If not a computer or some musical fix, it may be something on the car or even a kitchen appliance. I remember one time wondering what had gone wrong on the old desktop, it was throwing up all sorts of odd wobblies. No virus found, a system restore didn't fix it, checked all sorts of other things, only to find that the enter key was jammed down on the keyboard with a crumb. (Serves me right for eating a sandwich over it the night before)

Well, I cold use the "senior moment" excuse Eddie. And Nev, when the car or appliance acts up, I find saying a few words I can't print here and hitting it firmly might help. And VT, yep, perhaps this will save someone else's headaches. I'm learning a number of new songs for a new client, and since I sequence my own backing tracks, that is very time consuming. Being able to record them on a faster computer is saving me some time. The old XP is so slow in rendering to Wav, it's slow in everything. You know how it goes, once you get something faster, the old "fast" is now a snail's pace Insights and incites by Notes

Well, I could use the "senior moment" excuse Eddie. That is a daily event at Casa del Eastside, Notes. Or is it "Totes?" I'm so confused....

I'm not sure Eddie. They say that memory is the second thing to go --- and I just can't recall what is first. Notes or is it Votes???
