To weed out parts... use a DAW. Drag the tracks into a DAW and use envelopes to control the volume.... also use cut/copy/paste to remove parts and copy other parts in that you do want to play in a given section of a song.




I use these production chops in that manner ALL THE TIME. It's how I get my songs finished and sounding like I want them to sound.
